Sounds like you are on the right track and your not crazy to want to fence so much. Charlie is 17. Between lessons and club he is at fencing 5 times a week. So see, not so crazy. We are fortunate to have a lot of different ages in our club for fencing, but it is nice when you have a strong support system around your own age. We are primarily a saber only club, although some epee fencers around NC State have started coming over and that always brings in a few other fencers of that weapon. Great hearing your updates and we're always happy to answer questions. I am assuming that Greg is you head coach. He seems to have infinite patience and is a real asset to the sport.
Charlie fences saber. So does my husband. Congratulations on getting your saber. It is a very exciting sport to be a part of. We have met people from all over the state, the southeast and all of the country. We have made many friends within the fencing world and seeing them at competitions is like the "icing on the cake". A little something extra. One of the good things about competing is making friends from other clubs.
We live in Durham. Please have reasonable expectations of yourself and your progress.Fencing is a great sport and can be a lifelong sport. My son who is a year older than you are has just begun to have National success. He has been fencing for several years. Of course everyone develops abilities at different rates. I remember when my son went to his first competition, he was about 12, his coach set a goal for him to get a touch. Just one touch in the whole event. The next time it was to get a touch in each bout. Your goals can be big or small and your success can depend on setting realistic goals for yourself. Have your coach help to set them with you.You might take a look @ the first Jr.Progressive in Durham. It will be happening Oct. 23 or 24. But don't feel like you have to rush out to compete. Do it at your own pace and don't be afraid to compete.Every fencer I know has had losses and still do, even the best.
There is a lot of saber fencing in NC and being done by teenagers. Competitions are occurring almost every weekend at some place in the state during the season. Look on Askfred.net for competitions in the Southeast Section. There were 2 saber events last weekend. I believe 1 in Charlotte this weekend and 2 more in and around the Triangle next weekend, just to name a few. We buy a lot of equipment, ie jackets, lames and gloves from PBT in Charlotte. We have never had any of their gear not pass inspection at events. Excellent gear and it holds up well. Usually you can receive it in 24 hours. Good luck with your fencing and we will look forward to meeting you at events. Fencer's Mom
