During last November I was lucky enough to be invited to The Agora in Busto Arsizio. The national Italian Museum of fencing of which Giancarlo Toràn is the curator, located in the space the now defunct museum of textiles originally occupied. While there Toràn gave me a tour of the museum, conducted in Italian, explaining the history of fencing in Italy. I was quite amazed at some of things I witnessed, they have physical copies of treatise from the 1600's and earlier from the early european schools of fencing, such as in Spain, Italy, Germany and others. All of these have been painstakingly scanned and archived onto computers within the museum walls, I was lucky enough to be given a digital copy of one of these ancient treatise. On the tour I was guided through the development of fencing over the ages, specifically how it developed in Italy in later years from martial art to sport and how after the second world war the main four coaches which brought about the big changes in Italian fencing were Ezio Triccoli, Antonio di Ciolo, Mangiarotti and Livio di Rosa (who, if I understood Toràn correctly, was a direct student of di Rosa).

All of this culminated into one of the most exciting pieces of the museum. The Nedo Nadi collection included masks, blades, letters, images and other items which once belonged to Nedo Nadi and were recently discovered within a motorcycle shop. Getting to handle one of Nadi's blades was quite a thrill!

At the end of the tour I was shown the computer archive. Here all the things I thought never existed or were long lost have been collected. Recorded lessons from all of the great fencing masters, (I was lucky enough to take back a copy of a Triccoli lesson), footage from Olympics starting from around 50 years ago. And ancient treaty upon ancient treaty.

Toràn was very generous and I had a great time learning more of the history of this great sport. If you speak some Italian and are ever in the Milan area, I highly recommend you to visit the Agora. But if you want to learn more about it, I am currently finishing writing a Point-in-Line article about my fencing experiences in Busto Arsizio and my time at club Pisa Scherma. Read Point in Line to find out more!

Hi everyone,

I'm working on an integrated systems problem and thought about writing new software for some of the current scoring machines out there. I've come up with a few features I think might be helpful but I'd love to get more opinions.

Firstly I'd like to add a simple debugging mode that will help narrow down, if not pinpoint, the cause of hardware trouble (i.e. if it's body cord, jammed tip spring, or reel ect.). And, going along that line, adding a testing mode so that users can easily check other scoring machine timings. What do you guys think?

So when searching for a Negrini plastron, I stumbled upon 'Fencing Korea' (http://www.fencingkorea.com/mall/m_m..._ctid=01180000) which seemed to heavily sponsor Negrini as far as only selling it and some Absolute equipment.

What took me off guard were their prices; at approximately 1000 won to $0.9, their Negrini Evolution plastron cost less than $80, compared to $120 at cheapest US prices, and their Evolution jacket is $265 compared to near $300 that I have seen here, In fact, these prices nearly match Negrini's own, leading me to wonder if Negrini sponsors Korean fencing and otherwise how the prices are so low.

(Seriously, I would have liked a high-performance plastron for less than my Evoution)

Does anyone have any knowledge into this?

EDIT: oops, Absolute uses High-Performance.

Hello all,

I know this may seem like a strange question, but a friend I know from Cleveland that I grew up in has claimed he had fenced in the past, owning a Foil ( I've seen it in his old place years ago in the 1990s ). I haven't seen him in many years until he showed up on a social network recently when I brought up the fencing topic to another friend who's connected to him. He made a comment about dusting off his Foil and wanting to teach again.

However, I know my coach is certified and I believe that to teach fencing, one needs to be certified or insured for this reason. Because if he does attempt to teach without a mask and uniform (which I never saw at his old place), then he has to be out of his mind. And by the way, it's a dry weapon and I don't think he has experience in directing a bout or fencing electric.

To be clear, I did not fence at the time until I took it up in VT around 2008 and have been doing this since then.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Hello. I currently am training epee 3 times a week, and I have been fencing for a bit less than a year, although I have been unable to do so consistently for more than a few weeks at a time(I end up taking only one or two classes a week many times). I am planning on being more consistent, as I have fewer temporal obligations at the moment. I'm one of the weakest fencers in the salle, at the moment, although this may be due to comparing myself to the more advanced fencers, and I seem to be close to even with some of the newer ones. Years ago I fenced foil for three years. I never fenced electric prior to now. The lessons I currently take rarely involve bladework, which I understand is perfectly normal for beginners such as myself. We do quite a bit of free fencing, however. I am interested in taking more lessons, since I enjoy it a lot, and hope I can improve more by doing so. My only option for that, right now, seems to be qualifying to take private lessons. So I am wondering, other than coming more consistently, what things can I do to be ready to take private lessons? Or is this an unreasonable idea, and I will just have to wait until Maestro decides I am ready?

If you are running tournaments and want to take advantage of live result feature of FencingTime without the hassle of ftp into a website, follow below steps to leverage DropBox. -------

using the live publishing feature of fencingtime without having to ftp into your website by using dropbox

install dropbox on the same computer as fencingtime
goto Dropbox folder on the computer
create a folder called Public
log into www.dropbox.com
Enable public folder feature in your dropbox account by click on following link:
https://www.dropbox.com/enable_public_folder

start fencingtime
from the Tools drop down menu, select “Publish Live Results to the Web”
Check box “Enable live result publication” and check box each of the events to publish
Select “1” minute for “Publish every …. minutes”
Select Publish results to “File share or folder”
Select Output path of the “<your user account>\Dropbox\Public” folder

from Windows Explorer, goto your Dropbox\Public folder
if fencingtime is correctly configured above, you should see number of html files with a very recent time stamp
find the index.html, right click and select “Dropbox->Copy Public link”

goto Internet Explorer and select the address bar
right click and select “Paste” to paste the public address of the live results
this website link is accessible by anyone (even without a Dropbox account)

since the public dropbox link is often very long (https://dl.dropbox.com/u/.........../index.htm) and hard to share with tournament attendees, it is advisable to create an alias address using tinyurl.com

goto www.tinyurl.com
paste in the public dropbox address
type in an optional text into the Custom Alias text box
click “Make TinyURL!” and share the new address generated with your tournament attendees

if you are using the same computer for next tournament, you do not need to repeat any of the above instructions.
