Just got home from Legal research & writing class. One of my well.....ditzier classmates was (is) having problems in the class. She didn't know how to locate a case in the paralegal stacks and she said she wanted me to show her how to do it one day. We're like 8 weeks in at this point in this accelerated class and I really can't believe that she doesn't know how to do this. Locating a case and now statutes is like basic. We learned that in week 2.
I told her I would help her. When class was over I asked her if she wanted me to show her. We go over to the stacks and I just pull a volume in the section where the Federal Reporters are off the shelf so I could show her. She instead pulls out her brief because she wanted to show me what she got and I guess have me give her some pointers. She had a pretty low score and the prof wanted to give her a chance to revise it so that she wouldn't get a failing grade. I really didn't want to even go there b/c the prof has a strick policy on "collusion". The library was closing so I told her I'd help her and point her in the right direction but not in the library and tomorrow.
We leave the library and she asked me to walk her to her locker. I wanted to just go home but I didn't want to be rude so I said yes. She whined the whole time about being sick and about her weight/looks (she's like 5'2" foot maybe a 100+ pounds) and it was really annoying. I told her that she looked fine and that I'm much bigger than her so what is she complaining about. So we get to her locker and getting to the whole point of the post, she asks me how old I was. I said 27. She was shocked. She said she thought I was 19-22 and that I looked good. Um...okay. Thanks. I laughed the laugh an "older" woman laughs when a younger woman says something so stupid all you can do is laugh. As if 27 were old. If I were 40 and she said she thought I was 19-22 and that I looked good then I may or may not (it would depend on what kind of mood I was in) take the compliment because you know....40 is old. Just kidding. We all need a reference and since I was about 20 my reference for what old is has been 40. As I get closer to 30 that reference point will undoubtedly change.
