I recommend Thriller edited by James Patterson. Suspenseful, not gruesome, and short stories, so you can read as much or as little as you have time. A gotta read is Marley and Me- if you like dogs.

I finally began the sword of truth series by Terry Goodkind this summer. It has been pretty entertaining so far. Though I strongly recommend Stephen Pinker's newest book, Stuff of Thought as well.
