We oughta have a forum for Veteran Fencers

Admittedly, I haven't fenced in ages, but I still haunt f.net for my fix. I have tried to start a thread asking other fencers if they have arthritis and if so, how do they deal with it when they fence. Alas, I can't start the thread. Plus, I'd rather not bother younger fencers with aging problems, but I think a forum for veterans to sound off might be in order.

So, I've been sore all summer, and figured I was just out of shape. Now, there's this thing called rheumatoid arthritis and I guess I'm stuck with it. The medication I'm currently trying says to avoid contact sports (wtf?) and of course, no alcohol.

If you, dear reader, have any personal experience with arthritis I'd like to hear how you manage. I hate to even consider selling my stuff, but there it is.

    There IS a veteran's group: http://www.fencing.net/forums/groups/vet-fencers.html

There's a little header in the upper right, something like "Group Tools". Click that and there's a "Join" option.

My sister has arthritis she's got a lot of good advice and help from the "Arthritis Centre". In Canada hospitals/ charities will often create outpatient centres for people with common medical issues. Perhaps you have something similar locally?

Non-prescription treatments she has found to help her are Boswellia, MSM, & Omega 3 oils.

Most people know about fish/ flax oils/ Omega 3's.*
Here's a link to what the other two are:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boswellia
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methylsulfonylmethane

I found MSM works better for my joints than glucosamine does, plus MSM is naturally found in foods where glucosamine isn't a normal part of one's diet so it's not considered either a mineral or vitamin supplement.

As with most vitamin/ herbal remedies it can take several weeks to notice a difference. The benefits over some pharmaceuticals is that they can be easier on your gut and overall health.

*I rely on Omega 3's to keep my many old knee injuries from affecting my mobility. Since pulling half the ligaments in my knees several times, I wasn't able to climb stairs or walk without pain... in my 20's & 30's. A lot of the advice my sister has gotten on joint pain has come from me & confirmed by the Arthritis Centre's findings. There's hardly a joint in my body that I haven't mangled while playing some contact sport.

Go ahead and start forum threads. If there are enough Vet related ones, then I would create that sub-forum. Without the content telling me there is enough interest for it's own sub-forum, there's not much justification for creating it.

I'd just as soon hang in with the general fencing forum myself--the young'uns put up with us just fine!
