I can die happy. At 1:30 I was on the strip in DEs and I was fit to be tied. My opponent was a girl I had beaten before, but not easily, and my mind was in a turmoil about being late for an appointment. Was I gonna throw the bout to get on with my day? No way. I just got down to business and beat her 15-2. Very satisfying, even though I had to scratch the next DE. Do you suppose some people need pressure like that to fence well?
We had group practice last night. It was oppressively hot outside, and I really had to push myself to go, but the gym was a pleasant 72 degrees. Strangely, only one teen showed up; the others were, uh, adults.
We had a real nice mix of epeists and foilists. After footwork we fenced each other, and we got in about 7 bouts. I was satisfied with my work: I really tried to keep the point on the target, and and just move the tip, not the bell. (I don't think I quite succeeded in that departmen

Lately I've noticed that there are an awful lot of epeeists around. Seems like whenever we have a student survive the beginning class they pick up the epee. This past spring the club was a sea of white- quite disconcerting for us lame wearers; it's about hard to find someone to fence with anymore.
Except this past week- I was late for practice, missed footwork and everyone was all suited up and fencing by the time I arrived. I opened the door to a whole bunch of foilists. I dunno what cha

A week's gone by since the last tournament, and the bruises are finally starting to fade, but the experience and satisfaction hasn't.
My husband grunts in disgust when he sees the dozen or so off target touches on my lunging leg, but he really wigged when he saw the bruise on the bicep. Strangely, I'm ok with it. I was marked by the guy who took first, an A fencer; I am just thankful the touch wasn't low enough to re-injure my supinators.
I kind of sucked in foil, but I fa

Last night was group practice. After an hour of footwork drills we suited up.
My equipment is giving me fits- the zipper broke on the jacket, and I'm down to one electric foil, which has an interesting 80 degree bend near the tip. I know it's gonna break, but I keep straightening it, and it's gone through several practices and a competition- intact. I purchased a new blade last month, anticipating this one's demise. The new one's broken already.
This past weekend was the second annual Montessori 101 Challenge in Waukesha. It's not a big tournament, but it's closeby and fun people. Saturday I sucked in foil. I held my own in mixed but by the time women's foil came up I was on fumes, so I didn't place at all-- unless you count the booby prize.
I think epee is slow and kind of boring, and I really don't want it to affect my foiling in a negative way. To get the numbers up to a rated tournament I did play. Much to my surprise and ch

Tonight I was so furious I walked out of the club after footwork, even though I'd been looking forward all week for fencing night. My sense of justice was horribly bruised after an argument about ratings. Iam even even more hurt, realizing I had been used to manipulate ratings. I was asked to fence epee one day just to get enough bodies to make it a rated tournament. I placed third, and was thrilled to death. I also directed a bout that I am very suspicious was thrown so the lesser rated

I've been foiling around for about 5 years now. I fence recreationally, will never be one of the GOOD ONES. I like the light tick of the weapon on weapon, the slimming, sexy lame, the exciting parry-riposte action, and the satisfying way the blade bends on the touch. Foils appeals to my personality-- I'm one who goes by rules. There are no rules in epee!
At competitions the foilists make a respectable showing. The serious women foilists enter mixed and women's matches; women's foil is a

Since our club has committed to having a local competition once a month we thought it would be a good idea for some of us to know how to direct; that way, we're not always scrambling to find directors or leaving fencers to direct themselves, which I hate. So when this USFA ref seminar opportunity came up last weekend I attended.
I've been fencing for about 5 years, know a respectable number of rules and have a little feel for the action. I understand the hand signals, but don't really
