In Fencing Journals Frustrated |
#13 03-03-2010 05:04 PM |
I am so frustrated that I still can't seem to get the basics imbedded in my brain. Getting your arm out first is not a difficult concept -- but I still start the lunge before the arm. I understand waiting on your opponent for that split split second to see what they're going to do in the midst of an attack or feint, etc. -- but I rarely do it. I know what I'm doing wrong the second I start doing it -- but it's too late by then and then I just do that same thing wrong -- again. I'm frustrate

In Fencing Journals So tired |

This winter is killing me. Though it hasn't been all that severe in Midwestern terms, I am so tired of being cold -- cold to the very core of my body. Just can't seem to get warm. And because I'm always so cold, every ache seems to ache even more. I'm also tired of never seeing daylight. I go to work in the dark and generally don't get out of work until it's getting dark. I'm tired. I'm tired of being tired. I need sunlight and warmth desparately. Please hurry Spring. At least we're n

In Fencing Journals I made it |

I made it!! I'm fifty. Half a century old. I find that amazing. Truly never thought I would live that long, but God appears to have had other plans. That I did make it is a gift all in itself. (Surprised AARP hasn't sniffed me out yet.)
Even though my birthday is in January, I really don't like this month. It's long, cold, snowy and just plain harsh. According to my mother, during my first few days here on this earth there was a major winter storm and cold blast that knocked the powe

In Fencing Journals Best Day of the Year |

My body is all about daylight -- sun comes up, I get up; sun goes down, so do I. I am not vampire material. I know that Christmas and anniversaries and birthdays can all put there claim on the title of "Best Day of the Year", but for me it's today -- because as of today, THE DAYS START GETTING LONGER!!! Ahhhhh, thank you, God.
On a completely different note --- Been flirting around with an Italian grip on on a foil and have to say, I really like it. I've tried a french, but seem to spen

Fenced women's foil in my last tournament. My legs and arms felt like lead through the pools. Didn't warm up beforehand. By the time DE's came around, my body was responding a bit better.
Most of the fencers were highschoolers. I swear, the way some of them bounce around like bunnies, they're drinking meth-laced power drinks.
I love fencing these young kids because they really make me work.
I hate fencing these young kids because they really make me work.

Fenced in a foil tournament this last weekend and after pools was right up there with the boys (6th). I was rather pleased with that. But then the DE, which I lost, put me back to about where I should be.10th
Only acquired one new bruise -- on my back leg ; which is good because my front thigh is in need of a hiatus from bruising. 99% of the time the bruises are my own fault because of the way I parry my opponent's blade right into my leg. Been trying to change that and

In Fencing Journals This really is a great sport |

Consider:
Either gender, any personality, any physique and almost any age can learn the sport.
You get to wear "geeky-chic" uniforms
[fencers had the one-gloved hand thing going long before Michael Jackson (rip) made it a "fashion" statement]
You get to brandish a weapon at another person without getting arrested.
You salute and shake hands after trying to impale and/or slice your opponent.
You get a great cardio, physical and mental workout every time.
Fencer's butt!!! -- need I say more!
If you're an extreme introvert, not only is the mask for protection, but you get to hide

Well, my "upping my epee" plan lasted about a week. I'm back to foil. I just feel more foil'ish right now. Which doesn't bode well for me this weekend, since I've signed up for a big epee tournament. Should have been practicing epee, but two years haven't a good epeeist made me, so I'm pretty sure two practices this last week wouldn't have turned me into an epee phenom. I'm going to get my butt kicked, but that's OK. I find it great fun and always a learning experience to fence people

I prefer to fence foil and at club practice will generally suit up for foil. In my thinking (warped as it sometimes is), foil is just more "gentlemanly". For me, it brings to mind the image of two stately gents, dressed in their finest, politely trying to skewer the other guy first. The limited target and the maneuvering required to stab the other guy, in that limited target, just seems more "refined" and "proper". I like that.
But come tournament time, I prefer to fence epee. I know pa

In Fencing Journals Unfortunately, I stunk |

Fenced in a tournament this last weekend. I'm so glad tournament season has started back up in our area!! !**!!!**! (That's me doing a happy dance.) Unfortunately, I pretty much stunk.
I need to take lessons. Club practice is a great workout, both footwork wise and bouting, but I feel that without instruction on what I'm doing poorly, all I'm doing is cementing in my bad habits and mistakes (deep sigh). Problem is I just don't have the extra money for lessons right now and with winter
