'Nuff said about that. I have been training fairly regularly--Wednesdays at MA; weekend lessons with Istvan. No new content really. We continue to work variations on dynamic stereotyping--I have, after 20 years of fencing, finally begun to really fence--that is, to use tempo as the cornerstone of my game, and to set up situations where an opponent has a restricted set of possible responses.... I'm grinning because I did get caught out a couple of times this weekend ...
Lesson with Istvan Was on a business trip this week, so no fencing in MA on Wednesday Took a lesson from Istvan today (I'm putting this here, so I don't forget--hopefully will be able to import to my journal once Craig debugs this function). 1. M: invite S: 2x head cut. M cuts 4, S parry 4, riposte head. Standing, w/advance, retreating (retreating footwork is back foot back w/ two head cuts, parry w/ front foot back, riposte standing). ...
Fenced Wednesday in MA--NH and AL present. Didn't take a lesson because I had to get up at 0500 on Thursday, so I had to leave a bit early. Fenced fairly well--continue to focus on tempo vs. power.... Saturday, took a lesson with Istvan, for the first time this year. Badly needed it, but it went much better than I expected. 1. M extends. S bind 4, cut wrist twice, cut head. M cut flank; S parry 3, cut head. Standing, with one advance, with two advances, w/ three advances. ...
Trained last week and this week in Mannheim. Not as ugly as I might have expected, but the tin man has definitely been out in the rain too long. I've determined that AL keys his annoying cut-ins on a strong step prior to the final step, and that you can kill him in place by simply advancing with small steps and lunging when you are in distance. Or if you want some gravy on your touch, throw in a big strong advance with a big strong extension well out of distance, ...
I have been neglecting this poor journal.... I have been fencing very irregularly since my last entry. Work basically just ate my lunch from mid-July until late November... then we got into the Christmas break period. We did train in Mannheim the last two weeks, and are looking to train regularly again. I overstretched a hamstring a bit last night (front leg). In other news, Istvan has gotten a full time job as fencing master for a club in Basel, Switzerland, ...
