I've been thinking a lot about what I get out of fencing. I currently don't have the time to compete or to train as much as I would like. I have been shifting my goals to be more processed focused, with mastery (however unattainable and for that matter nebulous) as a the long term goal. Each week I'll find an area I need to improve and then work specifically on developing the skills I need to achieve this. This, I hope, will make my training more productive and more fun. I am almost but not quite a veteran. I became very aware of my age about 4 years ago when I tore my left calf. The injury is commonly known as tennis leg and "usually occurs in middle-age athletes." I finally realized that my wife was right, I was no longer a spring chicken. As you age the body does not recover as quickly or as well as it once did. Extra care has to be given to injuries but also to recovery in general. I think half or more of my chronic injuries would go away ...

Every so often someone post on the forum looking for information and advice on strength training for fencing. As is the nature of the forum the replies run the gamut from practical to pointless. But possibly the first question a fencer should ask themselves is how strong do I need to be. The answer of course will depend on the individual, their body and their fencing careers.
