  1. Sheridan Fencing Academy Veteran Sabre Season Opener

I had a good time last time I went to NYC for a veteran event at Sheridan, and this time there were some very good people preregistered. Also, my car was working (it was in the shop for a good bit this week because of electronics problems). It was a nice drive up.

We had Miyako DeRose, Natalia Oblonsky, Angela Diegel, Eva Thornton, and Cynthia Starr. Natalia and Angela are from Manhattan, Eva is from Capital and was at the veteran camp with me this summer, and Miyako and Cynthia ...

  2. Liberty FC Sabre

Because I had a cold this week (and a field trip on Friday, and was still recovering from Parents Night), I held off registering for the Liberty FC Sabre until a couple of days before, but ended up deciding to go. I have my usual post-cold asthmatic bronchitis. No matter how mild a cold is, I always get a cough as soon as I get over the worst of the cold. It was amusing - I was in a meeting this morning, and an acquaintance who is a nurse practitioner said to me, "You know that isn't just a cold ...

  3. Kickoff

I got up at 3:30 and drove down from Philadelphia to Fredericksburg, Virginia, seriously drowsy most of the way, drinking Red Bull and coffee and slapping myself in the face to stay alert.

It was better laid out than the last time I fenced it, though it was still packed pretty tight. They should have replaced the PA with perhaps semaphore, flags, a relay system, or a display screen, because you couldn't make out a thing anyone was announcing. However, communication was good nonetheless ...

  4. New Jersey Senior Olympics

I have always enjoyed going to the NJ Senior Olympics, but this year it was just an outstanding event. In the WS, we had Jane Eyre, Annie Mannino, Kim Lorang, Donna Pepe, Jennette Starks-Faulkner, and Agota Balot. Seven national competitors, three of them members of this year's Vet 60 WS world team, one an alternate, one a member of the Austrian Vet 60 WS world team, and one an alternate in the Vet 50 WS. As I say, it's always fun, because Gladys Berardi does such a great job organizing it, but ...

  5. Attila Petschauer Sabre Open

There weren't enough women entered for the Veteran Challenge WS, and they couldn't fence it mixed because it's a ROC now, and it was twice as far, so with regret I cancelled my registration and drove up to Poughkeepsie to fence the Petschauer. The women's event was a decent size, and Charlie Astudillo was running the referees very efficiently. The armorer just inspected the mask, and was interested to see that I had the new fastening system for my Leon Paul mask. It was a nice airy field house ...
