We had Jessi1, Meng, and Kiersten, and they took their time getting ready to fence, but I managed to get three bouts of five in with each of them. Meng has fixed his footwork substantially and is varying his tempo very well, but now has graduated to being easier to set up with the tactical wheel (Parenthetically, I notice that I am most likely to yell when I manage to pull off a tactical set-up like that). Since Jessie beat me with good distance and footwork last week, I went in closer with some false-real actions.

My lesson with Mark was moderately bewildering, as if he were thinking something through. He watched Ivan Lee and Jason Rogers fence in the gold medal bout and was struck by how much Ivan used point attacks with disengages (apparently Jason thought Ivan had pulled his arm back and let Ivan get quite a bit ahead), though Mark conceded that Ivan's astonishing wingspan let him get away with a good bit. Mark was not impressed because neither fencer changed his game quickly enough.

I think I'm going to blow off Sectionals. I'll make up my mind for good on Wednesday, but really I don't want to drive to Pittsburgh for an eleven-person event, especially because it looks from the Athletes Handbook as if it is now a 25% qualifying percentage instead of top 8 and besides I don't care about the IA. There are some good fencers going but not good enough to make me drive five hours and stay overnight. I'm still going to San Jose for the Vet-50 WS, but the I-A isn't fun enough to make it worth the couple of extra days.

Are you sure you didn't read the junior section? Here's the bit from IA qualification paths:

Brad - what page is that? I wouldn't be surprised if I was misreading, but I didn't see anything aside from what I mentioned.

I might just go if I have a chance of qualifying--I know most of the fencers on the list and they're all quite competent, so it would be worthwhile. However, I'm also suffering from my usual feeling about Sectionals, which is that they are at the absolute wrong time of the year, when I'm feeling stout and stressed.

    Argh.

It's in section 2.11.2 on page 21, which gives the qualification paths, seeding criteria, and format for Division IA.

Bah. You mean I don't have an excuse to stay home? I could swear I accessed the Athlete's Handbook and looked on page 21, but I STRONGLY suspect your version of reality is far more connected than mine is.

Feh. I suppose I'll go after all. The girls who are going to be there are fun to fence, anyway. Besides, Nicole Glon is going to want to fence me again after her Cherry Blossom one-point loss--she knew she had me then but just didn't do what she needed to do Oh, the joy of being a rite-of-passage roadblock.

Don't worry being a rite of passage roadblock is better the most people your age can hope for

Yeah, I take my satisfactions where I can get them, and sometimes having someone very good take me seriously enough to trounce me is a pretty good satisfaction.
