We ran several more DEs. No Doug, no Zac V., no Max V. Beau fenced John, and the two of them were practically gasping for breath after the first three actions--both of them tall and weedy and neither one of them able to hit the other. Everybody did well, and we hared out of there pretty early because I had a meeting I had to make. On the way back I had Jacob, Max S., and John orbiting me like small whizzing planets, excitedly telling me things they had noticed while they were fencing/observing/refereeing/strip coaching. It's funny teaching middle school. They don't shut up, they're so crazy, and I love them. I have heard from colleagues that middle school teachers tend to be the happiest. I assume that's because what happens is completely out of our control and we know it.

Tomorrow I will draw up a DE table for the loser's round. We'll try to finish the top half and hopefully fence the final bout electric.

Yeah, I loved teaching middle school more than any other grade.

I always thought of middle school kids along the lines of the old Richard Brautigan poem...he had a line about loading mercury with a pitchfork...middle school kids are like mercury, you never know what shape they will be in when they walk in the door...and everyone just stands back atstonished that you would even enjoy teaching them...

Yeah--they seem very intimidating from the outside, but they're still just kids, and I do love teaching them. Not to mention that in our high-stakes school, the parents back off a good bit more in middle school.
