I haven't been fencing at all for nearly two weeks! And I haven't even been engaging in f.net discussions, even though some very important talk has been going on about the proposed change in qualifying paths. I'm just too tired and stressed (catching up at work after Moscow has been a marathon conducted at sprint pace) and I find it rather discouraging to think about all this stuff right now.

I've been hopeful that veteran women's sabre in the US would get more populous, not just stronger, but our numbers don't seem to have gone up much at the NACs over the past few years. Division into age groups may be part of the issue, of course.

The only local veteran event in the past year that I really thought worked well in terms of size was at MFC in Manhattan, and even that was mostly guys. Bill Hall's event in Massachusetts is great, but always ends up being at a bad time of year for me.

Someone mentioned fencing vet events combined at the ROCs and I hate that idea, but I also don't want to show up at a qualifier made up of, at most, six people. I have spent a lot of time encouraging veteran participation, and had some success, but we just haven't reached the point where we can see some growth.

Joe Streb just sent out an e-mail arguing that the Vets should secede from the USFA, which just made me want to go lie down with a cold compress on my forehead. I like being in the USFA, and when veterans run things they get really peevish and argumentative.

I noticed a few upsets in the DEs and if it had been one or two or fencers I did not know, I would shrug it off but the numbers are sufficient that I think it was due to unevent refereeing. At the very least "differences in interpeting ROW". I note that I had no complaints about the referee for my pool bouts or my DE. [Lost 13-15.]

Last year the Remenyik did have much better refereeing; although the top refs were excellent it would still have been sub-par for a NAC. This year it was pretty much mediocrity across the board with a few competent and terrible refs rounding it out.

I don't know if something else was going on the prevented them from getting some of the top cadre this year, but it seems like the question of maintaining the level of refereeing has been answered.

The Reminyk - one of the ROCs which is proposed to have a VET comp later - had bizarrely bad directing the year I didn't fence due to an injury. Last year, I encountered NAC-level refereeing but I just don't have faith that (1) all ROCs will step up the qualilty of refereeing and (2) they will maintain it.

Yeah--and the problem of refereeing at the local level also occurs here, though not in the degree to which you are referring. For instance, at the event when I last saw you, the referee of one of my DEs was awful, and I had to change my game completely to deal with him. And at the open women's events I go to, even Liberty Cups, the referees tend to be young male fencers who are sometimes inattentive and also sometimes thoroughly prejudiced in favor of the way their coach would like things to be called. When I get a tournament with real national-level referees, I'm so happy it's ridiculous.

I would have had quite a struggle with my third DE in Moscow if I wasn't confident that my referee would be able to see tempo.

What I'm getting at the moment is a lot of tournament frustration. There are differences in referee interpetation of ROW and I think the differences are more obvious here -- where there are fewer referees who work at NACs and SN -- than in your area. It takes me at least one competiton at a NAC to realize I can do things I cannot do at local competitions here and have them be called correctly.

Well, I wouldn't rule me completely out--I'm crazy that way--but you're probably right that the others might be less inclined to go. I think it's a problem with the veteran's circuit in general that we have jobs, families, and lives (and often, but not always, common sense) when it comes to going all over for tournaments. You and I are certainly willing, though, and I suspect it pays off eventually in tournament savvy

That's going to be one of the challenges for that ROC. I predict participation by those within driving distance and a few first-timers trying it for fun. I do not expect to see Becky, Tina, yourself, Jane, Sharol, etc. For that matter, I suspect the other ROCs will have similiar problems even if the date is better.

Well, the Div II/III/Vet/Wheelchair is March 26-29 in Dallas. I don't know if I can handle that much travel in that month, financially or physically. March is a tough month.

Arnold Fencing Classic March 6-7, 2010. Julia Richey is in charge. I may be worth it as a warm-up if a sufficient number attend and if the referees are good. I'll report what I know when I know it.

I looked at it on FRED and it lists open mixed foil, epee, and sabre in addition to the younger age-group events. Veteran events aren't listed.

Last I heard the Arnold Classic was epee only. Is that changing?

Hee hee hee. Some reputations are well earned.

I don't drive that far if I can - I get too drowsy - but it's worth a short hop flight if it looks strong enough & well enough run. What are the dates? Is it close to the March NAC?

lindajdunn Says:
Funny. I've been mostly out of the loop on veteran politics and yet when I heard someone had suggested that, Joe was the only possible name that popped into my mind.

I heard they will add a vet event to the Arnold Open in Columbus, OH in March. Is that close enough for you to drive? I'm working on drumming up interest here in Indy.

You think? Joe seems to also like introducing motions to get shot down.

Could just be that Mr. Streb likes being argumentative.
