    Recent Discoveries

On more than one occasion, I have been told that I am "too tense" when I'm fencing. Probably true and definitely a problem. When tensed, the body is in constant conflict with itself. It is faster to simply contract the right muscles than it is to un-contract the wrong muscles then contract the right ones. Anyway, I've been working on that by taking a deep breath, letting it out slowly and purging the tension from my body before starting a bout. The ...

After having finished DFL in epee (and better in foil) in a recent tournament, it took a leap of faith (as the name of this entry implies) to enter a tournament last weekend and ONLY enter epee. I knew in my heart of hearts that epee was my weapon of choice. I was not so sure, however, that my performance would bear out my decision.

Last night at practice I was just coming off a tournament entry and a week off for R&R. After fencing a good friend and long-time epeeist, he said to me, \"You\'ve made the transition to being in \'epee mode\' by default.\"

Feedback like that is always appreciated. It let\'s me know that I am making progress.

Much more to learn and do.

Good days and bad days happen. You just don\'t expect them all in the same day.

In any sport I undertake - fencing included - I compete in order to measure my progress. It\'s not about the fame, the glory, or the trophies. (It\'s not that I don\'t enjoy receiving any of them, it\'s just not about them.) This past weekend I entered a team tournament and had the privilege to be a part of our Salle\'s epee team in spite of the fact that I first picked up the weapon only 5 months ago. ...
