I didn't want to believe it. But it appears to be true - at least for me.

I have consumed dairy products all my life. I like dairy products. I have read the web-sites warning of the negative effects of dairy product consumption, but I had always considered them to be out on the lunatic fringe. After all 225 million cows worldwide cannot be wrong, can they?

That being said, I am always up for an experiment. A while back I tried soy milk. The stuff tasted TERRIBLE! I could not finish it. I rarely, however, condemn something with only one test. A couple of weeks ago a good friend offered me some soy milk, but it was different. It was chocolate flavored. I liked it.

That was enough to start another experiment. For my entire life I have often capped the day off with a glass of milk. Just on a whim, I started substituting a glass of soy milk for my evening dairy milk. Then the most amazing things started happening. I started sleeping better. I was less congested, snored less, had fewer and lighter mid-night headaches. When I woke up in the morning I no longer had stiff and aching muscles and joints. Huzzah! I could get out of bed in the morning not feeling like the crypt-keeper!

The test is still in progress but I think I am onto something. This is one of those things that pisses me off about aging, because I really like my dairy products. I have no intention of giving them up completely, but I do intend to cut their consumption way down. Moderation in all things.

So, based on the amount of dairy I have consumed in the past, I will probably be putting one cow out of work. That's bad for the cow, because an unemployed cow, as you probably know, is "dinner".

You'll probably find milk is the hardest to digest. It's normal as we age to not be able to digest milk. Some brands of soya milk are better than others. I personally like the vanilla flavoured ones. Pretty much all of them will have calcium etc... BTW... soya is a plant estrogen, it'll not only help you wife with menopause but keep both of your faces looking young.

The easiest milk product to digest is yogurt. Usually cheese, ice-ream etc... are okay, but if you have problems (or want to reduce the amount of dairy). I suggest staying away from the cheddar soya cheeses (unless you like velveta/ cheese whiz taste). The mozzarella cheeses are great melted (not so great otherwise).

For ice-cream... the rice based (Rice Dream) frozen desserts are really nice, soya ones not so much, some tofu ones aren't bad.

Were you drinking whole ( cow ) milk, 2% or skim before? That could be the difference as well, if you aren't actually lactose intolerant.

Alright, before I begin, I think we all know where my position on this is...

With that out of the way, I've got a few suggestions for you.

Have you tried drinking raw milk? I'm not going to make any absolute claims, but I think you will have the same relief you are getting with soy milk if you start substituting regular pasturized milk with raw milk. Pasturized milk is fairly useless to the human body in terms of nutrition, due to the destructive affects of pasturization on the milk. I'd look for any small dairy farms in your area, and stop by sometime to ask if they would be willing to sell you raw milk. I believe that the current law in NY is that to sell raw milk, the farm must have a license, and can only sell it from the farm. While you're at the farm, have a look around to make sure that they are using up to date milking and sanitization practices. If you're getting your milk from a farm with a good reputation for cleanliness, you shouldn't have any problems with the safety of the milk.

    Anyway, just a suggestion.

It was skim milk before. Unlike my father, milk has never given me any digestive tract issues.
