Tonight was a two-for-the-price-of-one event... and more... STAR WARS!!! And a pirate!

The derby for tonight began with the B teams for both teams: Ft. Wayne Swat Team against the Naptown Warning Belles. Before this began, however, the crowd was treated to a roaming band of Star Wars characters. Storm Troopers (my husband tells me these were members of the 501st), rebels, CP30 (no R2D2), an ewok, Chewy, rebel force members, etc. were all present and one Johnny Depp look-alike with dreadlocks.

The first brawl began with the B teams and the Belles went out front early and stayed there, winning the event fairly easily.

Next up were the A teams and it was a hotly fought battle until about 5 minutes before the end of the first half, when the Derby girls grabbed the lead, took it to 20 points, and owned the track. After the half, the Sirens came back slowly, often scoring only a single point, until they had a one point lead with about 10 minutes to go. By 2 minutes before the end, the Sirens had a nice 10 point lead but that's only one jammer making two circles through the pack ahead so the Derby Girls got their jammer out first and boxed in the Sirens jammer while their jammer cycled through once. The Sirens fought back, doing everything they could to stop the jammer who made one fatal mistake: She pushed a blocker with her hands.

That's a foul. The jammer was ordered to the penalty box and without a jammer, you cannot score.

She'd scored 5 points before committing that penalty and was close to making that second circle through the pack with time to spare.

I note that there is an after the event party and I predict that at least one jammer is going to be getting very, very drunk.
