Time to update the description. WSV50 fencer since 2004. Mostly recovered from two meniscus tears in 2006 (not fencing related) and other minor injuries. Focused on improving fencing skills and avoiding injuries. Goal is to qualify for the WSV60 team in 2012.
The daughter's roller derby team is now a member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). Last weekend, they had their first competition against a WFTDA team and won, 102-68. I wasn't there, but my husband was and he said that they had so many attendees that they had to warn attendees that it was standing room only and then turn people away because they simply could not let anyone else into the building. More, one of the stands threatened to give way during the event.
They had about 4,000 attendees when they'd been averaging 2,000 per event. Worse, this particular event wasn't at their usual venue and was actually a SMALLER facility.
They're now working on insuring future events are in a larger facility with better resources (concessions, parking, SEATS) for the attendees.
In the meantime, I have yet to attend a fencing event where the spectators are not either non-competing fencers or relatives of fencers.
It's just not a spectator sport.
Maybe we need to adopt tough names and start wearing skimpy skirts and fishnet stockings. I think, however, that most of the guys wouldn't look very good in fishnet stockings.
