Time to update the description. WSV50 fencer since 2005. Mostly recovered from two meniscus tears in 2006 (not fencing related) and other minor injuries. Focused on improving fencing skills and avoiding injuries. Goal is to qualify for the WSV60 team in 2012.
During lesson last night, Coach made a comment about how I didn't look threatening when I was preparing to attack. I needed to look more aggressive.
Okay. For some odd reason, I thought of a documentary I'd seen where Hiliary Duff was cast in the role of Wendy the Witch in a Disney movie. In one scene, she's working with a goat and the animal trainer is shouting, "MEANER!" --which, oddly enough, was the name of the goat. His objective was to get the goat's attention. Hiliary Duff, however, thought it was an acting direction and tried to look mean.
So there I was, advancing and trying to look threatening and I'm visualizing myself in a red outfit fencing a goat.
Oddly enough, it DID work.
For whatever reason -- which may have something to do with the hellish work week and overindulgence of caffeine -- I'm feeling fairly happy lately.
I will not make the world team. I probably won't even be alternate this time. I am, however, mostly painfree and I can still do many things that friends and relatives cannot. Rather than sit around and whine about what I cannot do, I'm trying to take joy in what I CAN do.
So Jacobson, Douville, Eyre, Turner, and others are better fencers than me but to quote Pink, "So what?" I'm still a fencer. I'm out there, working and practing and striving to be the best that I can be and that (imho) is what it's all about.
A competition is merely an opportunity to learn how well you've mastered the ability to think and respond appropriately. It's just a way of measuring progress.
