Time to update the description. WSV50 fencer since 2005. Mostly recovered from two meniscus tears in 2006 (not fencing related) and other minor injuries. Focused on improving fencing skills and avoiding injuries. Goal is to qualify for the WSV60 team in 2012.
The best description of last night's practice is "trainwreck".
I can only hope that the rule of the theatre applies to fencing: A horrible rehearsal means a good opening night performance. If not, I'll finish 12th.
My timing was off. I crossed my feet. Repeatedly. I was so predictable that one opponent scored a touch on me with eyes closed.
Somehow, I've got to let go of all this negativity and convince myself that I'm a good fencer.
Just for a little while? Work is insane and there's some stuff going on in real life that is distracting me (to say the least). Worst, there's only 12 WSV50 signed up and I HATE that. I do not consider Tina Jacobson to be a true U (does anyone?) and in looking through that listing of competitors, I know it's going to be tough regardless of which pool I'm in.
Food will be a problem. I'm packing Ensure.
The next three competitions are just for fun but the first competition, the WSV5

I've noticed that over the last few weeks and months, I am increasingly questioning director calls. I half-apologized to the director who was in charge of both my pools yesterday. I know him. He's an excellent director, who directs at NACs, and yet I probably questioned his calls a dozen times and once, after losing a point to a newbie fencer, and being given a perfectly described explanation of my timing being off. I did a hard and fast direct attack for the next point, turned and asked, "

I don't know why and I strongly suspect it's biology/chemistry rather than anything that's happened lately.
There were only ten of us for the WS event and I finished tied for third. I'm very annoyed with myself because I lost my second DE due to FWS -- fencing while stupid. I kept trying to do second intention manuevers and was down 8-2 at the half. I fenced much better the second half after abandoning those attempts but I still blew it.
And then... Mixed Sabre with 3 wins in a pool of

The is the first time since I began fencing that I've seen more than 10 WS fencers signed up for a competition and it's SNOWING!
Not much accumulation is forecast but icy road conditions are already reported south of us (one C fencer is driving in from the area with reported icy road conditions) and the worst band of weather is expected to arrive in a couple of hours. There's a winter weather advisory north of us and at least two of the pre-registered WS fencers are

Mars Needs Women was a very bad (imho) b&w movie. What we have here, however, is a desperate plea. If you're female, a USFA member, and have the equipment needed to fence sabre, AND you're within driving distance of Indianapolis, please come fence Saturday and make this our first-ever C1 women's sabre event. It's the St. Valentine's Day Massacre Women's Sabre competition.
I didn't ice my knee last night. In fact, I haven't iced my knee as often as I once did and the only reason I'm icing it at all is to avoid the possibility of swelling right before Atlanta.
I am not healed. There was no laying on of hands to make my knee whole again and I'm very aware that it feels "different". More, I still have no power in that knee to push forward into a good lunge.
However, knee is no longer hyper-sensitive and swelling in response to mild exercise. I don't need t

This month's roller derby was titled, Kick Start My Heart, and took place last night. Yes, there were couples celebrating Valentine's Day at the roller derby.
During the half-time, they omitted the usual entertainment and instead, auctioned off busts of the skaters. Note that these busts were real, honest to goodness... well... busts. They made casts of the skaters' chests and sent the casts out to local artists, who painted them. [They painted the casts, not the skaters' chests.]
Sometimes, efforts to achieve one goal bring pleasant side effects and in this case, I am achieving a goal set back in 2001 when a friend and I started a fitness dare and declared one of the goals to be buns of steel. Or, as an unnamed person not-so-nicely put it... developing a harda$$.
When I was young, girls were warned against participating in any form of sports (we were such delicate flowers back then). Now, women are allowed to have muscles but us older women are not supposed to boa
