My standards are so low.

Today, I did a parry two, which was the wrong response to the attack, and I did not get the riposte while the attacker scored the point and I was deliriously happy. Why? because I actually managed to hit the blade. Yes, I made the wrong response to the attacker's action but I HIT THE BLADE!

I've been trying for over a month to do a successful parry 2 and every time I've tried, I've missed the blade. This time, my aim was correct. [Everything else was wrong but hey... I'll take the small successes where I find them.]

Picture a scrambled egg in a frying pan.

What is it about getting a lesson that makes my IQ drop at least 40 points?

On the plus side, I note that I am making progress on one of my major fencing goals: patience. With the newer fencers, I can set up second intention attacks and I'm managing to be patient, retreat, and to parry and riposte. I cannot yet do this with our teenage fencers, but the number one item on my list of problems to correct for this season was my lack of patience.

The knee is still swollen, but no worse than it's been at some competitions so I packed my cyrocuff and went to practice.

I also packed my camcorder so I could get a recording of the proper way to do a parry 2 in sabre. This one has been driving me nuts for a long time because I just can NOT get it and while it's not something used frequently, I want to add it to my list of skills. Every single time, I blow it. When I get the parry, I cannot riposte in time because I've turned my wrist in ...More Read More

IMHO, this is not going to make a good bumper sticker. If there were problems with the name before, it's just going to get worse. Now there will be chain letters flying into my mail box about how it was intentional and it just proves that The Left Behind is anot a fictional book, but a true warning sent down from on high and that Obama is THE ONE who will bring about the end times.

I notice there are now services offered for After The Rapture.

Today, I took a day of sick leave due to the knee problem and yes, I am the same person who only took off a couple of days of sick leave after surgery. No, it's not that bad. I just decided that I seriously needed to take some medication and - based upon previous experience - I shouldn't be at work while under the influence. More importantly, I shouldn't drive under the influence. Never mind that I wouldn't be convicted; I would be a threat to others on the road.

How red is this state/county? The Libertarians once ran on the Democratic ticket because the state changed the filing deadline (but only for non-Democrats and non-Republicans) and no one was running for office on the Democratic ticket.

I usually don't vote in the local elections because the races are uncontested (except for the Libertarians). Also, I'm a government employee and thus subject to the Hatch Act. It's safest not to become involved in politics and thus not risk inadvertedly doi ...More Read More

is swollen again.

Looking back, let's review what may have caused it.

On Thursday night, I forgot to put my ice into the car and went fencing without it. The knee only felt a little stiff the next day so I drove three hours to Mishawaka and did some footwork while waiting to fence and then fenced and drove home (another 3 hours... it's no faster on the way home). The next morning, I went to practice. I note that both Friday and Saturday, the leg didn't feel very stiff and I did take my ...More Read More

Every once in a while, we get a beginning fencer of veteran age and then they disappear. Why? I have checked my deodorant and mouthwash and I'm not doing or saying anything to scare them away so... why?

From a purely objective POV, last night's fencing was a failure. I was 2-1 out of the pool, losing the 3rd bout by one touch and then I lost the DE 11-15. However, thinking negatively is what got me into a bad place at the SN last July and my primary objective is to work on my mental attitude on the strip. In that respect, I made a few baby steps forward.

I began, as usual, by telling myself I'd do badly and focused upon talking myself out of that. It didn't matter. It was a small bout. ...More Read More

We are going from a pilate group of two to a pilate group of four, utilizing all the pilate reformers in the room and reducing the price accordingly.

Yesterday was the first session of this and we worked some muscles that I hadn't worked in a long time, which causes some concern about the right rotor cuff and the elbow problem. OTOH, I note that I am regaining my old body even if I do have some pockets of fat that I didn't have before.

The legs are smooth and firm again and while that ...More Read More
