Knock Down Knits: 30 Projects from the Roller Derby by Toni Carr, a.k.a. Joan of Dark is now officially published. Amazon shipped my copy and it arrived today.

The book looks good and the knitting projects are cool.

Her first booksigning will be a week from Saturday at the Carmel (Indianapolis) Barnes & Noble.

Woot!

I note that some of the projects could easily translate to knitting projects for fencers. There's a pea pouch to knit for icing your knees and a knitted pillow for ele ...More Read More

In Fencing Journals Slow Walking Women Entry Tools Rate This Entry

There's a Dilbert cartoon about being stuck behind slow walking women who manage to space themselves such that no one can possibly walk past them. I have rediscovered today that the likelihood of being stuck behind these slow walking women increases in direct proportion to one's need to reach the restroom. More, the women walk slower the closer they are to the restroom. Even worse, the women will turn at the restroom door and stand there, in the doorway, talking while taking such small steps ...More Read More

I have been distracted for a short while due to a generous invitation of an editor friend which has driven me to chocolate and Diet Coke re-addiction. Thus, I am pausing to post a short, stress-relieving rant in what I hope will be a safe place where no one in writing sees it.

I have not written any non-humor pieces since (1) mother became ill and (2) I injured my knee because time sinks opened up and swallowed what had once been my so-called writing time. I have now been given an invitati ...More Read More

If a vampire bit me, he (or she) would be up all day. I am full of caffeine and chocolate and very, very hyper.

OTOH, I have reached the required milestone that I set for myself and if I wake up in the morning, review it, and decide it is not all trash, then it will be worth it.

I think.

Because I'm wide awake, I've been looking at the check-in times for the NACs and making travel plans. Yes. Really. I haven't committed to airline tickets yet but I am contemplating purchasing tick ...More Read More

Yesterday, I only put in 30 minutes on the ET before hitting the hot tub (I had planned to use the pool but there were too many people in it). Today, I visited Mother and arrived home late and thus it was late when I arrived and I forgot stuff and then finally "oh, to heck with it!" and I blew off exercising to sit in the hot tub.

Tomorrow, fortunately, I have pilate class and cannot blow it off. I'm also planning to go to fencing practice.

Tonight, however, I am stuffing myself with ca ...More Read More

My workout today was much different from the one planned. I woke up several times during the night with severe leg pains, usually in the calf and sometimes on the shin. Naturally, I sat down at my desk with my left leg propped up (the one that seemed most prone to pain) and on ice and Googled.

Shin pain. Calf pain. Dehydration seemed the most likely cause so I've been bottle after bottle of water and the pain has been coming in waves. No pain... oh my gawd pain!... no pain... here it co ...More Read More

  #193 New 07-19-2008 07:17 PM
Today, I drove from Indianapolis to Dublin, OH (near Columbus) to fence in the Alexandre Dumas Memorial Open. It was a C1 event with 15 fencers participating. We began with 3 pools of five fencers each and the referees were also fencing (except for one, who was waiting to fence foil). My first bout was with the fencer directing and I had considerable difficulty because I'd be moving down the strip when he'd suddenly throw out a line and I'd step into it. Attack - preparation. Drat! Even when I ...More Read More

I had a body composition test at the gym today on the premise that I can't know where I'm going if I don't know where I am.

Current body weight: 114 lbs.
Total body fat 19.4%
Total body water 55%

body fat ranges from 13-21% are considered athletic. When I had this done last year, I was at about 26% so I have absolutely made progress.

The goal now is to keep the weight 110-115, get the body fat to 16%, which I think will be optimum for my body type (I do not, after all, suffer from ...More Read More

After running around the office with a barcode scanner at work today (and I note that my left arm, which I was using, A-C-H-E-S), I headed to the gym where I put in twice my usual ET workout. Explicitly, FOUR (4) plus miles and just a little over an hour. Minimal sweat. Not really tired, but badly bored by the time I finished.

I signed up for a body comp tomorrow so I'll have a baseline of where I'm at as I start stepping up conditioning and hope that the knee, the elbow, and the shoulder ...More Read More

While I was at the SN, I thought I had some mosquito bites and possibly poison ivy and figured it would be gone in a couple of weeks. However, the redness and swelling has spread and I've got one big red patch that's about 3 inches in diameter and the deepest red I've ever seen on my body.

A trip to the pharmacy is on my long list of things to do this weekend. I also plan to buy a six pack of Diet Coke and a bag of dark chocolate M&Ms and to lock myself in the house Sunday and refuse to an ...More Read More
