In Fencing Journals Pilate Reformer Entry Tools Rate This Entry
  #36 New 10-29-2007 07:12 PM
C had a cancellation today so she called me and asked if I was available to try the Pilate Reformer today rather than Wednesday. Thus, I wore my tennis elbow brace and gave it my best shot. She's going to call me Thursday and if my arm still feels okay, we'll schedule me for Pilates every Wednesday evening before fencing practice. [One hour gap between -- just enough time to ice the elbow and drive to fencing.]

The good news: No pain.
The bad news: I've lost one heckuva lot of upper body strength and my right shoulder made a cracking noise every time I made sweeping ...More Read More

I went to the Wellness Center after work Friday and did my usual lower body
workout and then some crunches while icing my knee before proceeding to the hot tub in preparation for doing my arm exercises. [Ten minute of heat first and where better to heat up than in a hot tube?]

The hot tub had more people than usual and one-by-one, they got up and left until the only occupants beside me was an older couple that I'd noticed before. The man had a thick scar down the middle of his chest that led me to suspect he'd had heart surgery while his wife was a rather squar ...More Read More

I've been trying to figure out how to revamp my blog/live journal/web pages/myspace etc. into a more effective method of tracking what I want to track and ranting in the appropriate places versus spilling across all venues.

I started with a web page back in the days when it was considered odd for anyone to have a web page. I used text editors and my own HTML coding and FTP for uploading and downloading and thus updated the site almost daily with stuff that no one cared about but me.

In Fencing Journals Eat a frog in the morning Entry Tools Rate This Entry
  #33 New 10-21-2007 11:55 AM
I once read somewhere that you should eat a live frog in the morning, immediately upon getting out of bed. That way, all the little annoying things that happen during the day will seem minor by comparison.

I do not eat a frog in the morning, but the routine is sufficiently annoying that the remainder of the day feels pretty good by comparison.

After I shower, I roll a hot pad and insert my elbow into it for at least 5 minutes. I then do 5 active stretches, unplug the heating pad, and mo ...More Read More

I really hate the usage of the word "warned".

During the second period of a 10 touch (i.e. Veteran) direct elimination bout, having been warned in the first period that they were not actively attempting to score, the fencers contine to not actively attempt to score. The Referee should:
a. Give each fencer a YELLOW CARD
b. call "Halt!" Award each fencer with a RED CARD. The fencers will go straight into the next period of fencing, without the minut break and without the possibility of c ...More Read More

The non-combativity rules are a little confusing to me as a sabre fencer, so these are also giving me some problems. I THINK I've got it. The change I found reads:

a) If during the two first periods of a direct elimination bout of 10 or 15 touches both fencers make clear their unwillingness to fight*, the Referee will award a warning (yellow card) against each of the two fencers and will proceed to the next period, without the minute rest.

96. During a pool bout, the fencers are not ac ...More Read More

I've been reviewing the changes and marking what I believe to be the correct responses but when I reached this one, I had a problem:

48. No penalties have been given. After causing incidental corps a corps with Fencer Y, Fencer X leaves the side of the strip with both feet.
a. Y advances one meter; X receives a yellow card in foil and sabre
b. Y holds ground except if it would cause X to be placed behind X's end line; X receives a yellow card in foil and sabre.
c. X loses one meter; ...More Read More

If this works, you'll see a picture of my daughter's horse. When I say little horse, I'm not joking. He's a miniature and he's been recently trained to pull a buggy. I don't know who took the picture but that's my daughter, her horse, and someone else's buggy and house.

I'm not a little horse today, but I am a little sore. I think the one-legged reclining leg press Friday did something bad to my back as I've had some difficulty standin ...More Read More

I've done a little housecleaning on my fencing journal, partially assisted by Simon the Cat.

There's nothing worth asking about.

I noticed that I once said I'd fenced Christ and corrected that to Chris. [No, I never fenced Jesus.] I copied some things to my offline journal and deleted them from this one or marked them private.

In the future, I will be using fencer X and fencer Y, etc. when referring to other fencers. Thus, no one will ever read about me fencing Jesus again.

I also think I need to stop ...More Read More

When I left work, I stepped outside and thought how beautiful everything looked. Even the lines in the parking lot looked brighter than I'd ever seen them before.

And then, it hit me.

You idiot! They've repainted the lines!

What can I say? It was dark when I arrived this morning.

My tendonitis hasn't healed. I'm still wearing this Cooperstarp thing (http://www.coopercare.ca/elbow_prod.htm) to fence, and I'm still miserably out of shape... but the joy is back. There aren't ...More Read More
