  1. Busy Wednesday night

    by , 02-28-2007 at 10:01 PM
One of the kids from school, Kumar, has been nagging me to show up on Wednesday so he can fence me, so I managed to motivate myself to get out there - and Kumar didn't show up! However, there were plenty of people there to fence. I fenced DJ, Chris, MK, AL, Shannon, Shai, and Tal. Haven't fenced Tal for at least five years! He obviously hasn't been fencing much either, because he was a little stiff.

I had my lesson with AL tonight before I fenced, because Monday night he was booked ...

  2. Touche, Greenville, Union review and updates

    by , 02-27-2007 at 10:42 AM
Touche review. The kids came back from the local tournament this weekend. All I can say is wow. They understand why fencing foil locally is still dicey but it helps them try and adjust to the ref, I think that is good training.

Now in epee it really doesn’t matter ( as much), which is the real reason that they went. At least there are other people there and now we don’t feel like it is a $20 practice session. Luke and Ryan beat up on one of the architects of the heresy that was ...

  3. Memories...

by , 02-27-2007 at 06:48 AM (My training log)
Of my lesson two weeks ago with Alex.

Because it was important and I need to write it down:

S: beat-extends-advances. (So wrong for a sabre fencer, but so important). M may:

o stand still (S ends attack with lunge),
o retreat (S pursues and ends attack),
o take a parry (S deceives and ends attack with lunge)
o retreat and take a parry (figure it out yet?)
o cut in (S ends attack-you beat, you rule, right?)

    I had a CRAP ...

  4. slow Monday night

    by , 02-26-2007 at 09:49 PM
It wasn't as slow as LAST Monday, mind you. It was CR, Jessie M, Jessie2, and Leanne. CR was fencing terribly because they had been doing nondominant work. I don't think it's all that good for adults to fence non-dominant. At least it's not for me. It's annoying, mostly, and it messes up my dominant-hand fencing. The thread on concentration reminded me of the benefits of a relatively narrow focus for the older fencer. Practice, lessons, bouting, and tournaments should be specific and should ...

  5. the funniest (KOS) story ever told....

    by , 02-26-2007 at 12:07 PM
    The funniest story ever told.

I was asked as the last JO’s by the kids what the funniest story about the KOS organization was. You have to understand with the cast of characters that we have had there are a lot of stories that have happened over 25 years. I thought back and figured that I would tell them the t-shirt story. This happens to be my favorite and it’s always told to the newbie’s so that they can see where we have come from.

First, our schools in NY were in ...
