This week the pain that I used to experience when trying to get into the engarde position post-surgery (5 weeks ago now) is finally gone almost completely. Just dissappeared overnight and doesn't seem to be coming back, which makes me very very excited. Still swells up a bit but not to the extent of limiting some movement or flexion like it did before.

My physio just cleared me to start light jogging, and I have since completed two 10-minute treadmill runs at a pretty decent jogging pace. N ...More Read More

So it's been two days sicne the surgery... The knee's still the size of a small watermelon and it's pretty painful when I try to move it or put my weight onto it. To be expected I guess. Not quite sure how teh surgery went - haven't gotten a chance to talk to teh surgeon afterwards, but I assume everything went according to plan. The last thing I remember was the anasthesiologist asking me what my favorite beer was, and when I asnwered with a definitive "Kilkenny," I was already in the post-op ...More Read More

Some good news on the knee front.
Having finally seen the surgeon who will operate me last week, I called his office on Monday to set up a surgery time. Upon reaching his booking assistant, I was preented with a rather interesting dicotomy of choices: "it'll be about 8 months from now," said the assistant, "unless you want to do it next Tuesday..?" Imagine my reaction. Apparently just minutes before I called, someone else had cancelled their surgery and I was the first guy to call and request ...More Read More

...having stopped by my appartment to change I headed straight to the gym yeatsrday. The plan was to do an hour of cardio on the elyptical and then head down to fencing and work on some technical stuff. To those of you who have been reading my previous entries - yes I'm fencing again.

Have been doing a lot of rehab, and although I don't think I'll be able to get away without having a surgery (still unscheduled at this point), I'm able to put it 2-3 practices a wek with fairly solid footwork ...More Read More

So the MRI results are in... I spoke to my athletic physician about the implicatuions... he seems to think teh surgery may not be necessary but wants me to consults witha surgeon nonetheless... This all may as well be in Chinese to me, but if someone had something similar or knows what the impliactions of this are for fencing or excercises to help it heal, I'd be very thankful...

So the other week I got a PM from Samh praising me for my ability to foresee situations and offer timely advice (not fencing-wise - life-wise)... while I appreciate the compliment and generally think that I'm a pretty reasonable person, every now and again I do or say things that make me wanna call my mom and ask her how many times she had dropped me on my head as a baby...

Example number one:
Not really a surprising one, but after my physio saw improvement in my knee he allowed me to retur ...More Read More

I haven't posted anything in the last couple of weeks, mainly because theer wasn't much to talk about. I believe that I've alluded to some of the problems I've been having with my left knee since I came back in January... I've been working pretty hard on trying to extend my lunging distance and I guess I overdid it a bit, assuming that my body was able to handle it just as well as it did in my teens and earlier 20s.. Well I guess 25 is that threshold when things just stop magically healing over ...More Read More

This weekend is the BC provincial championships and I am once again homesick... I love Vancouver and certainly hope that I can return there for good someday. Although, right now things are pretty good in Toronto, both career- and fencing-wise, so I won't rush things.

But the reason I'm bringing up Vancouver, is to say how proud I am of my coach and clubmates for running what will definitely be the most memorable Provincials in a while. You see, Victor was able to score the Olympic Speed Ska ...More Read More

When I first got on Facebook 2-3 years ago, the first photo album I posted largely contained fencing-related pics of me and my friends. One of those pics was my screensaver at the time, that featured one of my all-time fencing heroes winning a bronze medal at the Torino world championships at the age of 43, just a few years after returning from an almost 20-year hiatus. The caption I put to that picture says "Igor Tikhomirov - the legend" and at the time I would have never thought that I would ...More Read More

I'm a very lucky person. Throughout my life I have been generally succesful with most of my undertakings, with a notable exception of sports. Though most would say that I am built like an athlete, I come from a family of academics who had no interest in sports. On top of that I was rather ill throughout my childhood and wasn't allowed to do much in the way of athletics until my mid-teens. I'm largely past that now, but it took me years to catch up to people my age when it comes to strength, sta ...More Read More
