  1. Purdue Spring Open

    by , 01-31-2009 at 08:12 PM
Today, I drove up to Purdue for the "Spring" Open. I note that I left reasonably early to insure I could find a parking space only to discover that the university had booked a swiming meet and thus I parked at a meter near a residence hall and walked back. There was nothing else available.

Fencing started late and I was, unfortuantely, in a pool of FOUR. I hate it when that happens. I won one, lost one 4-5, and was down 2-3 when the left-handed, teenage (female) fencer, ...

  2. Thursday Lesson

    by , 01-30-2009 at 12:31 AM
I find it rather ironic that I'm finally reaching a point where I can honestly feel that I've made/am making progress and yet at the same time, I feel like I've just learned most of the alphabet and now they're talking about learning how to put the letters together to make words and sentences and then paragraphs and then I have to learn something called grammar and man, have you noticed how long this sentence is and have you paused for a breath yet?

I think we're all teach something to everyone. Not always positive things, but something that leaves an opportunity for someone else to learn from. Or not.

Fencing stuff: I remember being terribly tired, a screaming match and realizing it was that Olympian girl and that alternate World Cup something or other girl and the latter beating the other something like 5-3. I think I fenced three bouts and did fairly well. Coaches have been juggling the numbers to make sure everyone has decent ...

Haven't been updating lately because I just haven't been as driven since my mother died.

The fencing group at school continues to be awesome. Danny won the practice tournament I held. It turns out that I can practice in part of the gym when one of the basketball groups has a game. The coach at Haverford College was hard to get hold of, so we've been practicing outside or in the upstairs hall, so I'm glad to add the gym to our list of rotating venues.

    Today I had ...

  5. The Tactical Wheel

    by , 01-27-2009 at 09:10 AM
The tactical wheel is sort of a mythical beast within the world of fencing. Some fencers swear by it and others swear at it, claiming that it's little more than a fairy tale.

I have a page devoted to it because it does make some logical sense and put actions into an easy-to-follow progression, even if it's really not a wheel and it really doesn't exist in real life.

Think of it like a dragon... no one really believes in them but they make nice analogies for other real ...
