  1. Finally Back.

    by , 05-06-2012 at 03:27 PM
I had my last physical therapy appointment on Wednesday. The therapist gave me one last long list of exercises. We did the session and said goodbye. I have to say I was very pleased with the Penn Health system. I just hope I won't need to use it again for a very very long time.

I was pretty excited about my first lesson in over a month on my feet. Coach Jake and I worked on tactical stuff. Coach presents tactical problem, I solve it. Coach removes solution used from options, and ...

  2. Back on my feet

Thursday's class was the highlight of my week. I was nervous with regards to the strength of the knee, but anxious to get back to doing my footwork routine.
Going through the drills with the beginners, I was really paying attention to how the knee was handling it. My lunge felt good, but I wasn't making a full one at first.
I decided to sit out the game of 3:15. All the jumping involved made me nervous.

  3. Almost back

It's been 35 days (but who, besides me, is counting) since I injured the knee. I haven't been able to do anything but rehab, bladework on my own, and lessons bound to a stool.

After weeks of doing the p.t. exercises just like the therapist said I should, she finally has cleared me to take this evening's fencing class.
"Don't do anything crazy tomorrow, though." By that I suppose she means no long lunges and paying attention to exactly how the knee feels.

  4. Knee update, just watching

    by , 04-14-2012 at 04:36 PM
I'm headed to the club tomorrow to watch my pals fence the Div III foil tournament. Fun, but not as much fun as fencing in it would be.

The knee is sore, but there's a little less soreness every day. The physical therapist gave me a second set of exercises, designed to strengthen the knee. My goal of fencing the Summer National's qualifier on the 22nd is still questionable.

I finally made it down to the club for my first stool bound lesson. Pretty interesting to have ...

  5. Healing well apparently

Yesterday, 9 days after the back knee dislocation fiasco, was my orthopedics follow-up. On the way over there, I convinced myself that the good doctor was going to tell me I could not fence anymore. I was terrified.
If you ride SEPTA long enough, you realize you're either 20 minutes early or 20 minutes late for everything. I opted for 20 minutes early (8:00am). Signed in and settled down for what I figured would be a while reading ("Count Zero" by William Gibson).
