A Description of my Recovery from My brain Injuries

  1. Information guy

    by , 04-10-2012 at 04:27 PM (Greybeard's Brain Blog)
I have always been an information guy. I was just going over Robinís e-mail updates to people and the surgeonís report after I had my craniotomy.

Was it that amazing that I have reached the point I have today? Was the operation really that difficult? I really donít know. All I do know is the time from walking over to the hospital that morning to being taken to rehab 9 weeks later is completely gone. I donít know anything about the seizures or pneumonia I had in recovery.

OK, for the last 5 Ĺ years you have listened to me whine. Well, here comes another one. Let me out of my body.

I realize that mine is not a unique situation, but itís easy to tell someone, ďWell, at least youíre alive, there are plenty of people in much worse shape.Ē Really? Gee, Iím glad you told me that. Do you think I donít know that? Why donít you tell me itís better than having an anvil dropped on your head? Have you ever had that done? Itís better than being dead. How ...

  3. Was I like that?

I am going to a place called "The Challenge Center" here in San Diego. It is a workout/rehab center for stroke survivors only. What a great place. There was a new guy there today who seems to be a recent stroke survivor. When they would sit him up he would fall forward and could barely hold himself upright.

I know they tried me on the elliptical machine last week and it only took 3 minutes before my legs caved in. It's a good thing my PT/trainer was right there. I seem to be ...

  4. 10,000 Years of Jewish Guilt Crashing Down

I just got back from my workout at the Challenge Center. That is the facility that only works with stroke survivors. I love the staff and the people who work out there. But there are a couple of ďfreshĒ survivors and I am watching them learn to stand or walk or transfer better. They still have ďstroke talk.Ē I used to refer to it as ďthick tongue,Ē you know the feeling you get when you have a mouth full of Novocain and your tongue feels thick and you have trouble making words. You also get ...

  5. Do I go or do I stay?

I donít know what to do. I havenít worked since January of 10. I know I can do it. I am doing volunteer work with the Brain Injury Foundation and the Access Committee at the SD Zoo. It is our task to update the Zoo and Safari Park ADA Book to make sure the Zoo complies with the new regulations and then train zoo employees.

I am also trying to raise money for wheelchair fencing and am coming up with a big goose egg. I know they said to expect some rejection but $20 out of a thousand ...
