ok, so against my wishes and at the "request" of my coach i decided to suck up the late fee and enter the tournament in edmonton..was a small event and it was held during my typical bedtime hours of 12-330pm.
right now i'm super tired so i'll cut a long story short:
semi final: was up against a guy i'd never seen before (don't you just love these situations). somewhat heavy blade taker..or i'm guessing but he never really got my blade at all. i'd fenced him in the pool winning 4-2 using the french. i'd realized i had better switch to pistol. coach wanted me to be a bit more aggressive fencing the bout in his half of the piste...ended up being more middle. scored mostly on disengage fleche/adv. lunges after he tried endlessly to engage my blade. surprisingly the score was 15-7 for me. wasn't expecting that type of score as he'd just beaten a relatively strong fencer in the top 8 round.
so i'm on to the final against the 6'4" monster that typically cleans up at these events (either him or his buddy). its funny but a huge part of me was content with silver at that point (not sure if that's always good but it is what it is). i wanted to just fence the final and go home. knew he was slightly injured and as such i had an outside shot.
so the bout starts close but i'm up 9-5 at the break. i really wanted to use the bout to try different things as nothing i'd ever tried against him had worked before obviously. at 9-5 you'd think doubling out but when you're giving away 5 inches in height AND speed and explosiveness that's not really an option. so doubling out begins to work and eventually its 13-10 for me and i'm thinking it might just be possible...then i get nailed on an opposition 4 fleche..13-11..then we double out 14-12..is it possible...its 14-13..of course i always loose infighting touches what did i expect..at 14-13 i milk the clock down to :45 or so by pushing and giving back distance and continuing to push. i knew the fleche was coming at some point. when it did, it was just a bit short as i end up winning 15-13 on a counterattack to shoulder...so...first gold medal in the region...i guess it was nice to have another winner other than the usual two suspects eveerrryy ssiiinnnggglleee tiimmee..and it was all caught on film!! (ok, time to put some clothes on now..hehehe).
