Who am I? I have a happy little existence with my husband, my large yellow lab & my two kittens. My dog is 100 lbs of bouncy joy. My male cat is addicted to "Greenies", catnip & thinks he's a dog. My female cat looks like a sweet housecat, but is a serial killer.
I took up fencing after I turned 40 & wanted to find a sport that would keep me active and fit into my old age.
I spend my time coaching beginners, training, & working at our vintage autosound business.

Hi, I'm Sophie the Huntress purrrrr... (Her cat)

First off, I'm still miffed She and He went away a few days ago. Do They not remember how badly that went the first time they did that? The only way They're going to get the message is leaving Them when they get back.

So for the last couple days I've been sleeping outside, denying Her the pleasure of rubbing me during the day. purrrrr... They need to be reminded that They need me more than I need Them. After all, I'm Sophie!

To further demonstrate this (and because miffing makes me hungry) I was out hunting last night. I was tired of birds and mice and wanted something different. I couldn't believe my luck! I managed to find myself the perfect sized rabbit. The full sized one was more than a little kitty such as I, can eat. However the baby ones are the size of a field mouse... a perfect kitty meal size!

So I pounce! Then carry my squirming, noisy food back home. It's a long way back, but it'll be worth it because of the fun I'll have with this one when I get home. purrrr...

I finally make it up the ramp and into the house. I drop down my food and wait behind it waiting for it to move around so I can relive my glorious moment of catching it and She comes along. At first I thought "Excellent! Witness my prowess! Afterall I am Sophie. purrrrr...

You know what She does??? She picks up my meal and comforts it!!! That's my freakin' dinner there crazy lady!!! Humpf.. that's the last time I treat you to a chance to witness my greatness!

I haven't called the vet. I'm not sure I want to. Is it better knowing or not?

How did it go, did the baby rabbit survive..?

Yes... I know. Everytime she decides to practise "catch and release" in the house, I regret that decision. I forgot that I used to have an electronic cat door (my ex-husband made). Usually prey in the cat's mouth blocked the sensor so I seldom had this problem when I had cats before. I might have to look into finding something similar.

On the flip side... After discussing the baby bunny with hubby and the neighbour, we suspect a predator killed the mother as this rabbit was far too young to be on his own. Making him easy prey for my cat. In this case, I think my cat helped this bunny's chance of survival. No other predator would have brought the little guy to a human (who in turn brought it to a vet). Yup... man interfering with nature.

Hey you wanted a cat that would hunt

The worst was when our dog caught one (baby rabbit or squirrel don't remember which), you could hear it shrieking but she killed it off real quick, so nothing to be done.

This morning, I took the little guy over to my neighbour (who raises rabbits). They weren't home so I just put him with the rest of the bunnies.... I was hoping the mama rabbit would look after "her new baby". No dice... hers were 1/2 grown.

I checked a little later and he wasn't looking in very good shape. So I popped him in the pocket of my shirt and drove over to the vet.

If he survives, he'll be brought to a wildlife sanctuary and then released back into the wild. I wished I had dropped him off first thing in the morning, I think he would have done much better. <Sigh....>

On the other hand... I recognize this as an act of futility. Rabbits are prey. I saved him from being eaten last night, but I could easily see it being nursed back to health released into the wild and becoming an eagle, hawk, owl or coyote's meal within an hour. Such is life.

Ahhh... the nurturer vs the realist. It's hard to resolve these inner conflicts. He sure was a cute little baby rabbit. If my cats weren't so darn obsessed with him, I would have attempted to keep him until he was healthy.
