Who am I? I have a happy little existence with my husband, my large yellow lab & my two kittens. My dog is 100 lbs of bouncy joy. My male cat is addicted to "Greenies", catnip & thinks he's a dog. My female cat looks like a sweet housecat, but is a serial killer.
I took up fencing after I turned 40 & wanted to find a sport that would keep me active and fit into my old age.
I spend my time coaching beginners, training, & working at our vintage autosound business.

You fencers are all alike... I know you're expecting some exciting entry about some tournament where I get a nice shiny piece of jewellery... move along... this isn't that type of entry.

Nah, I'm talking about real gold... the kind you dig in the dirt for... gravel actually. Over the last week, hubby and his old buddy have been spending hours and hours over the phone while both are on Google Earth discussing their next gold panning adventure. They both did it in their youth and have decided to spend a few days of our vacation panning for gold.

We decided to invite the Europeans* along. There's a good chance they'll be some nuggets so we'll let them take them home as souvenirs of their Canadian mining expedition. It it struck us that the adventure is somewhat Canadian in nature... plus having young bodies for some of the work is always a good idea.

They were quite cute... last time they were over for dinner I showed them hubby's old photos (as an able-body) mining for gold. They thought they would have to dig deep holes in the earth. We assured them that this was a different kind of mining and we'll be panning by the creek. It's still a lot of work, but they're likely to see something for their efforts.

I'm not thrilled with the idea of gold panning... Extra driving, more mosquitoes in that area, setting up camp, then tearing down, so we can set-up again (it takes a full day to set-up and a day to tear down). More people, more food to prep... grumble... grumble.... I know it won't be too bad. Lots of helpers and the German is handy with a chainsaw. He made me laugh... he was saying how much he loves the peace and quiet of nature.... just him and the sound of his chainsaw. LOL...

*We met the Swiss guy last year while camping. He comes to Canada every year. The German met the Swiss guy in Canada. It's his first time here. This has been a childhood dream of his. He originally was going to take a year and see Canada, but has decided once he got here to explore BC, and maybe the Yukon. He's funny how giddy he gets over having a real "Canadian" experience. He's even goes to Tim Horton's for coffee... which is good, cause that's all he's going to find in most towns in BC large enough to support a coffee shop.

In Alaska, we would often take sand/mud from small culverts and pan that. The culverts in the US are waffled, and they act as little miniture sluice boxes. Almost always possible to get a little color from the mud that builds up in the ridges.

Otherwise you're reduced to slinging mud from the banks of streams, which is a lot harder work.

Yeah.... our usual spot has no bugs, I doubt this spot would be the same. I suspect it isn't a high enough altitude. On the plus side, our water won't be frozen every morning and the dog won't wake me at 3 am because he's cold and he wants me to start a fire in the wood stove we have in our tent.

This country still has a lot of gold/ minerals, so it'll be fun finding some of it. We have two pretty experienced hobby prospectors who are familiar with the area and the mining history.

I'm hoping to establish myself as camp cook so I don't have to spend too much of my time with my hands in a glacial stream... I know better than to get too involved in any of hubby's grand plans. They're always amazing experiences but seldom completely pleasant or comfortable.... hmmm I should add insulated rubber gloves to list so I can keep others comfortable doing the nasty work, thus sparing me.

Except for the mosquitoes, it sounds like a lot of fun.
