Who am I? I have a happy little existence with my husband, my large yellow lab & my two kittens. My dog is 100 lbs of bouncy joy. My male cat is addicted to "Greenies", catnip & thinks he's a dog. My female cat looks like a sweet housecat, but is a serial killer.
I took up fencing after I turned 40 & wanted to find a sport that would keep me active and fit into my old age.
I spend my time coaching beginners, training, & working at our vintage autosound business.

Well... I finally bit the bullet and got a cell phone. I hate the damn things. I can't stand hearing people's idiotic conversations in stores and restaurants. I hate driving behind someone on a cell phone. However, phone booths are more and more rare and there's times when having a phone is convenient.

So I got myself a cheap little phone (that does more than my hubby's 3 year old one) and $10 pay and talk. So every call is like using a pay phone. 25 cents at a time.

I wore out the batteries playing with it my first night. I like the scheduler in it. Put in all my classes with alarms to remind me to pack my car. Took pictures of all my animals. Learned all the functions and decided there was a whole bunch of useless stuff. I like learning new software.

For some reason my husband was surprised that I had so much fun playing with it the first night. For god sakes I read books and books on buying homes and mortgages before we got a house... When I get a car, the first thing I do is read the manual. Why would he expect anything different?

One snag... The manual told me how to turn on the phone and shut off the phone. He tried calling me yesterday. I had my phone with me. Shut off in my purse. Apparently... you need it "on" to ring. Stupid manual...

LOL... I just took a quick look at the entry and got as far as I wore out the batteries playing with it my first night. You're right about the "Out of Context" thread you dirty minded old wench.

I must admit, I feel better about hearing from people who don't consider it necessity. I don't even see it as something I need for emergencies to be honest (mainly because I hate that over-used justification/ marketing ploy). I simply see it as handy.

Umm, you know, there are a COUPLE of good lines in that blog entry that could be used in the Out of Context Quote thread... Just so's ya know.

Cell phones are a nuisance, but I need one for emergencies. When you live in the boonies, and drive around late at night, it's a good thing to have around. Not to mention those last-minute texts home to say you're staying out after practice. I don't use it to chat - EVER. If I wanted to talk to you, I'd email you. I just hate the highway robbery they charge for basic service here.

I had a regular ATT/Cingular account for several years while I was doing archaeology consulting, as I had to be in contact with contractors and various government functionaries. After I retired from that, I kept the account going until one day when I calculated cost/minute for the previous three months and it turned out to be over a dollar. So when the contract expired, I got a Go phone with prepaid 25 cent minutes, and have been extremely happy with it. I don't make a lot of chatty calls, but it's there when I need it. No contract, and there is no bill each month listing calls I made. I suppose it could be subpoenaed though.

Good to hear. I plan to use my phone the same way. My hubby doesn't believe that anyone can just use their phone occasionally, but I don't talk much on our land line either, so I can't imagine it'll be any different with a cell phone that costs me 25 cents a minute.

i used to think the same way...now i can't leave home without it. i just get the cheap pay as you go so basically its for emergency calls to CAA/AMA if needed (or for texting silly girls who for some reason, prefer that to talking..and to think they're adults!! anyway...).
