Returning to foil after a 14 year hiatus, I plan to blog my journey and encourage fellow fencers in their late 30s who have returned to the sport.

Took a two week break from all things fencing. Work has been extra busy and I find myself working on charting way into the evening. Kid's were sick with some fever filled nightmare inducing virus that kept them up and therefore me up all night. Then my MIL visited for the week.

I realized that I missed it alot and that the muscles I worked so hard for melt like butter with disuse. I need to get a serious coach. I need to learn some real tactics and work on my game before the fall. Unfortunat ...More Read More

Today I tried my hand at saber just to see what Peach is so gaga about. I was all "how hard could it be" and then got hit in the head. My ears rang a little after that. I didn't quite understand how a parry on my part was considered my opponents and I kept on attacking with bent arm when I realized its my wrist that need to do the work. So confusing but was alot of fun to learn. How did I hurt my pinky is what I want to know?

Next week it is back to foil in prep for my next E and under. It w ...More Read More

So I started off the day with a busy schedule and managed somehow not to eat and did not get water or coffee as they were busy replacing both at work with new machines. Got home found out the nanny had crashed my computer with my work info and had to pick up my husband and daughter from the train station giving me less then 30 to get dinner for myself. One mini bagel and cheese later I am out the door for fencing.

The class was great and the fencing fun. We really worked up a sweat and got ...More Read More

Allowing me to counter attack,
Seducing me with valid touches
(to points previously disregarded, discarded),
enjoying the rewards of the fleche,
and forgetting the ROW.

Get thee behind me!
Your pommel weighs heavy in my hand!
Your temptress blinding in all white!

I will not be swayed
though I enjoyed the moments temptation
and dare I say it,
may want to do it again?

Yesterday was the second tournament since returning to the sport last fall. I was feeling better overall and less stressed out going into it. It was a group of higher caliber fencers so I had no preconceived notions of greatness, only a plan to fence new people, learn how to read people quicker and keep up the stamina.

I met a great group of women in my pool. One girl asked me what high school I went to! I could have left a winner right then and there! Two others were vet fencers and member ...More Read More

So my biggest fear ever was achieved. I came in dead last! Last! Oh the horrors! I went through all the stages, denial through acceptance and have come out the other side a humbled soul. It is not that I thought I would win it all, I mean I just started fencing again in November after 14 years of nothing, not even real exercise. I just thought I would have remembered some of my prior coaching. But I was a mass of nerves and fear and by the time I could think to do something the bout was over. I ...More Read More

So next Sunday is my first competition as a returning fencer. As our club is new and there is no regular open bouting, my once a week adult class is about all the training I have gotten since I started in October 08. I have been supplementing by doing footwork, blade work with a dummy and cycling.

Today however I joined the clubs teenage class as they open bout the last half hour of a two hour session. Unfortunately and hour and 1/2 of intense conditioning and footwork had me beat (have they ...More Read More

I am feeling less high strung then I was before. I am trying to become zen about my fencing. I cannot control who I face or the refs decisions but I can control me, my tempo, my footwork, my hangups.
I am working on each little aspect, not for the tournament next week, but for the future. Once I realized that I was not in a race to get an A but that I want assure that I will fence into my 70s by getting my self and my skills in shape. "Its a road, not a destination" is my mantra and I want to ...More Read More

Yesterdays lesson was a wake up call.

I realized I fence better within the confines of my cerebrum then on the strip. I was so pumped I was over parrying and not reposting, lunging short because I was waiting for a response that didn't come and forgetting my distance. Ack! I was shaking my head and knowing what the coach was going to say after each failed touch against my opponent (who is an epeeist by the by).

Luckily I was able to change but not till 10 touches in did I realize and ma ...More Read More

It cannot be healthy. I didn't even do this in college. Perhaps its because the club is closed for the holidays and I have had too many days off from work...but I am seriously obsessed with my upcoming first tourney as a returning fencer. I have been checking askFred daily to see who has preregistered and looking to see how old, skilled, etc they are (that's google for you!). I have been watching all foil bouts on youtube and fencingchannel. In part it is helping my restart jitters, but at the ...More Read More
