Being a college usually means one networks using facebook. I used to feel positive about it until they started bombarding it with various useless and revealing applications.
I read that facebook is facing another petition. For any of you who have facebook, here's the link to the group:
http://unc.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2247153069&ref=nf

Or, in short:

This group exists to protest the fact that facebook does not allow us to choose to identify with any sex other than male or female. Forcing members to identify as male, female, or nothing at all discriminates against all those who do not fit neatly into the categories of male or female. Facebook needs to act as an agent of positive social change and give up this archaic and hurtful heteronormativity.

I find this funny and ironic.
1) Unless you have Klinefelter, metafemale, Turner, or some other unfortunate chromosome disorder, one is born as either male or female. One is able to "choose to identify" as either on this website, as well as who you're interested in. This website does not force you to identify if you don't want to.
2) One wouldn't be spending much time on facebook if faced with chromosome disorder. Other things in life are probably more worthwhile.
3) If someone's going to petition about something like this, at least get the sex/gender differentiation...this can potentially become a big change and if you're going to confuse thousands of people without knowing what you're leading, things can get complicatedly wrong.
4)Archaic?! Of course, male/female categorizations have existed for a LONG time. Except those hermaphroditic sea snails, fish, and the like...those tricky things.
5) heteronormativity- hm. I learn a new word every day. Heterosexuality makes sense in the biological reproductive sense, so I suppose it is "normal." Hurtful? Being a minority in any group always is in society.

I'm not against homosexuality, pansexuality, bisexuality, etc. My whole point was that I think the approach of this group could use a lot of work, but I have had friends who define their identity by their sexuality. I don't care what your orientation is, but if that is so, I believe that leads to an imbalanced and often obnoxious individual. Newsweek had an article recently about a child in the eighth grade being shot in the head by one of his classmates because he was gay. That was the headline, but upon perusal, the dead classmate had a lot of personality issues that his foster parents and even teachers and counselors didn't know how to mediate, largely because he threw around his sexual orientation as his primary and sole defense of his behavior. I'm not saying facebook's group is directly related, just something to keep in mind.
