GMUFC at the Chaos Invitational

We just got back last night from fencing an event called Chaos. There were ALOT of very new fencers there, but there were some people that knew which end of the weapon to hold. Overall, the GMUFC results were very good. We didn't have any of our best fencers there, and we still medeled in every weapon.
Foil. Our B strip foilist fenced a very nice event, and took 2nd out of 35. I couldn't be happier for how it went. I saw alot of very good things from him, but I also saw alot of things to work on before our next meet.
Epee. Our C strip epeeist came in 3rd out of roughly 35. I am so proud of him. In the 8 he was ahead 14-11, but let it get back to tied 14 14, then made a very nice remise touch at la belle to make the 4. Usually he has lost ALOT of 15 14 bouts, so this is extra sweet. Also, it is a great feeling as a coach to after working with a fencer on an action, to see him use it to perfection in a competition. We had been doing stuff with opposition 4 as a counter riposte against a 6 (he is lefthanded.) He attacked, got taken in 6, and made a beautiful opposition 4 to the chest. After the touch, he pointed at me in an awesome (all you man) type of moment. Then after going on to win the bout, it was just a great moment for both of us.
Also, something just clicked to me about his fencing. I know he always tends to get wild, and fences that way, and I never knew quite exactly what triggered it. But I figured it out. It's when he's tired. Such an obvious answer, but I just didn't realize it until now. When he gets tired, he rushes and gets REALLY big with his hand and rushes the attack and remise. When he is fencing well he is really taking his time, waiting for the opponents blade, then making alot of opposition ripostes.
Sabre. We had 3 sabre fencers, me and 2 others. Our C strip took 22 out of 33. He hurt his knee in his final DE, and stopped being really mobil. While we need to work alot on in his footwork, I really liked the tactics I saw from him. Alot of good sabre make them fall short type stuff. For his first semester of sabre, I'm happy.
Our B strip sabre took 10. He was a wrecking ball of disaster for the first couple people he fenced. He liked to explode off the line with a quick extension, so we wins alot of attack counter attack. We need to work on his defence, because once his attacks stopped working, he became way less effective. He lost in the 16 15-12 in a bout he could of won, he just didn't have the tactical progression the other guy did.
I took 7th.. I essentially wrecked everyone I fenced. Then in the 8 I was fencing a legit sabre fencer, and it didn't go well. I couldn't beat him off the line, and if I went to fast off the line he was getting the parry. I couldn't stop his attack with my PiL, because I was getting really big and sloppy with it. My reflexes were also just a little bit slow it seeing the search starting. Also, I need to do more 5s, and less big circle 3s. I can make a c3 work against the low level guys, but against the good people, they are just hitting me through it. I need to get my wrist up more to do a more classical sabre parry 5.
I really enjoyed fencing sabre, and the tactics I was able to use. I was really proud of one touch I had. I got called as in prep when we both came off the line in the box, so it was the other guys touch. Next action, right off the line, I pulled my hand pretty far back, to make the other guy see my prep, and think he could get the call, so he finished with advance lunge. I did it intentionally to set up a riposte, and I nailed the distance perfectly for it. Awesome. I MADE YOU DO THAT!! MWUHAHAHAHA
Overall, we have alot to work on, but I'm so happy with our results. It couldn't be better!
