    by , 02-18-2010 at 06:09 AM
For the past few weeks, there has been a huge influx of newbies at fencing. Some only show up for one week, but a few stay, and then the next week there are more newbies, and a few stay. There are now tons O newbies. It's a challenge to do footwork drills when space is so limited.

It's also a challenge to judge how long to keep the drills going -- this isn't a martial-arts club, after all. In karate, the deal is this: you do a lot of detail work for a long, long, long time, and ...

Eliza Anna Grier, M.D. (Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania, 1897)

Dr. Eliza Grier became the first African American doctor in the state of Georgia after putting herself through college and medical school by working one year and returning home to pick cotton the next, in order to pay for her fees. Yesterday Mark was in Memphis and there weren't many people at practice. Donna, Jessi1, Ben, junior-boy-with-the-heavy-hand, and Charlotte were there. I was fairly heavy-footed because of the lifting, and I have a little cold, but ...

    by , 02-16-2010 at 08:53 PM
I not only don't normally celebrate my birthday, I generally try to forget about it and really don't want to be reminded of it until it's over.

I've never, ever done anything to celebrate a milestone birthday like 30, 40, or 50, although I did want to go wall climbing for my 50th birthday and was unable to arrange it.

My 60th birthday, as it happens, will fall on a Saturday in 2012. Explicitly, Bastille Day. I have decided that what I want to do that day is compete in ...
