  1. Side effects

    by , 02-27-2010 at 11:14 PM
Like many women, I gained a bit of pudge and got way, way too busy after my child was born. I always stayed at least a little bit active, but nothing like I'd been in my heyday of training for two or three hours a day, four days a week. There just always seemed to be things that had to take higher priority -- and fair enough. Sometimes there just are.

A few years ago my daughter and I started training at a karate school together. I was hoping that this would give me the motivation ...

  2. Too Thin

    by , 02-27-2010 at 08:09 PM
Those who say you cannot be too rich or too thin would change their mind if they saw me in a bikini.

I'm shocked at my appearance in the mirror. Seriously. I'm a gaunt old crone. I do not own scales and haven't yet been to the gym where I normally weigh in but I did weigh in today at fencing practice and I'm at 114 lbs.

This is too low for me. Seriously too low. 115 was my target weight but I may need to adjust that based upon health and appearance since I'm decidedly ...

  3. I fenced today!!!

    by , 02-27-2010 at 08:02 PM (Greybeard's Brain Blog)
I finally had a ride to the club. It was worth every minute of it. I am having some issues right now balance wise. So I know what to look for when I go to Dallas. It isn’t like walking like a drunk, it is just little things like I can’t sit down smoothly and when I go to lift or stand it is like I don’t even have the limb, it just doesn’t respond.

As for fencing, I was fencing a relatively good fencer for a while and I did OK. There are episodes where I just take a vacation and ...

  4. five pounds up

    by , 02-26-2010 at 02:26 PM
We had two more snow days. Jeepers. Yesterday, I walked for an hour and a half in the non-snow (nothing stuck at all in Philadelphia), and today (in a much denser but quickly melted snow) I walked to the health club. I put five pounds more on every machine that I had been doing a full set with, and in most cases still managed a full set. Seems to me this slow-and-steady approach works just as well as going to failure for me. I'd rather do it completely correctly, with a full range of motion, ...

  5. What goes down...

    by , 02-26-2010 at 11:00 AM
Since Monday, things that went down, kept coming up. Fortunately, the food is finally staying down and I returned to work and then fencing practice last night. I didn't think I could make it through a full day of work and then practice but I wasn't pushing hard and I survived well enough that I'm catching a ride to Louisville tonight for a small local competition.

I expect 5 5-touch bouts and one DE. It's a mixed competition of mostly young guys and includes one C-rated fencer. ...
