  1. Subtle Hints but Not so Subtle odors...

    by , 11-17-2009 at 08:02 PM
I really really wanted to go to practice tonight. I had bought a light-weight blade for my sabre and wanted to see how it felt in practice. I also wanted to get another lesson from Kim before going to Millersville this week for the Friday Night Fights. I was all psyched to go...even still having the cough from hell...even against the advice of a few friends. Well...keyword: WAS. I went to put my gear together in my "coffin" (I only had foil gear in there from this weekend - none ...

  2. Verily, it doth feel good to be a gangster.

    by , 11-17-2009 at 03:37 PM
Funny, how fickle coaches can be. Last saturday, there was a local tournament. The week leading up to the tournament, he said i should relax. Use the tournament as a way to practice the drills i learned. Fence loose. Work on form. Work on clarity of mind. Then we get to the tournament. He takes one look a around at the competitors, and tells me I need to get my act together and fence to win.

    lol.

These kinds of mind games are quite confusing to me. I still don't know why ...

It was not a great evening. First, someone borrowed my jacket, plastron, and knickers and I could only find the knickers. The back room is a jungle of uniforms of various states of disrepair and it took forever to find a jacket that fit me, let alone my own. The jacket was thinner than mine and I felt every cut.

Second, most of the people there tonight were leaning forward--Charlotte, Bob, the newcomer whose name I forget; Mike always leans, and though I didn't fence Donna, I noticed ...

  4. What's going in your coffin?

    by , 11-16-2009 at 10:41 AM
This is a non-fencing related post that will not be of interest to most viewers. The title is due to the commercial meme running through my head, "What's in YOUR wallet?"

Lately, I find myself buying clothing again because my knee has healed to the point that I can wear things I haven't been able to wear in a while and thus I've been overindulging. However, I've been hit with the reallization that I'm growing older and that anything I buy now could still be in the closet ...

  5. Calculus of tempo changes

    by , 11-15-2009 at 08:00 PM
Neal Durando summed up a concept we were tossing back and forth over email with a simple phrase: "Scoring opportunities don't occur unless there is a tempo change"*

This is first principal and speaks to how tactics are actually executed on the strip (there is a bit of discussion about this with Jason Sheridan in my last blog post). Many coaches teach the actions that actually deliver the hit in the bout: lunges, beats, parries and their ripostes, and so forth -- what Zbigniew ...
