  1. They call me "point control"

    by , 10-03-2009 at 08:43 PM (Greybeard's Brain Blog)
Mr. No point control. When I fenced AB the safest place to be was right in front of me.

Unfortunately the new chair fencer could not make it today. However, the therapist did bring some other guys over. She is part of a program called “wounded warriors” for veterans with various disabilities.

It was so much fun working with these guys and doing what I could do on my feet. There was talk about letting them try chair fencing but I had to leave to spring my Scotties ...

  2. 125 lbs - slow but steady progress

    by , 10-03-2009 at 09:08 AM
That is NOT my weight. That's the amount of weight I'm pressing now on the reclining leg press. Before injuring my left leg, I was pushing about the same amount and I've been building to this slowly because my left knee tended to swell after leg press sessions. Thus, I backed off the weight and started focusing upon working one weight until it felt easy and then adding another 5 lbs.

I started with 120 lbs. for two sets and then added another 5 lbs. Next time, I'll start with 120 ...

Last night's lesson left me feeling much better about life in general and fencing in particular.

No, I have not made any great leaps in improvement. However...

During drills last night, I did a bad job (but at least did it) of jumping one-legged (the good leg) across the room with everyone else ...

  4. Slow hand?

    by , 10-01-2009 at 11:55 AM
Right before I left my last foil coach (well before the 2005 timings) we had been playing with the concept of putting the hand in play as late as possible when attacking in foil. By keeping the hand slightly "neutral" and held back during the start of the attack, my coach felt that there was a strong advantage to the attacker in making a last minute decision about which line to finish in. On the other side, the hand can be put into play very early to generate a reaction that can subsequently ...

  5. A New Reality TV Program

    by , 10-01-2009 at 10:11 AM
I suggest that for the next reality TV show, they have a real SURVIVOR series: Residents in assisted living facilities and the family members. Who will crack first? Who dies? Who lives? And which family member will be arrested for strangling their loved one simply because they cannot bear to see them like this?

Given that reality shows are all fake anyway, we might as well throw have a nursing home/assisted living facility one. After all, no one will really care when the old ...
