  1. “En garde. Ready? Halt!”

    by , 07-21-2008 at 03:02 PM
Let’s recap my first weekend of reffing, shall we? The good, the bad, and the ugly.

Friday night (with one day of advance notice that I would be making my refereeing debut at the Bay State Games)… scholastic women’s epee. Good – I get to start with epee. Give me something nice and uneventful for my first bloodletting. How hard can it be? C was on the strip next to me, and it was only her second time out, so at least I wasn’t in it alone. And DJ Apostrophe was the observer, and he was ...

  2. Sunday Workout

    by , 07-20-2008 at 04:13 PM
My workout today was much different from the one planned. I woke up several times during the night with severe leg pains, usually in the calf and sometimes on the shin. Naturally, I sat down at my desk with my left leg propped up (the one that seemed most prone to pain) and on ice and Googled.

Shin pain. Calf pain. Dehydration seemed the most likely cause so I've been bottle after bottle of water and the pain has been coming in waves. No pain... oh my gawd pain!... no pain... here ...

  3. Alexandre Dumas Memorial Open

    by , 07-19-2008 at 06:17 PM
Today, I drove from Indianapolis to Dublin, OH (near Columbus) to fence in the Alexandre Dumas Memorial Open. It was a C1 event with 15 fencers participating. We began with 3 pools of five fencers each and the referees were also fencing (except for one, who was waiting to fence foil). My first bout was with the fencer directing and I had considerable difficulty because I'd be moving down the strip when he'd suddenly throw out a line and I'd step into it. Attack - preparation. Drat! Even when I saw ...

  4. Heavy workout day

    by , 07-19-2008 at 05:13 PM
I woke up early and, because it was supposed to be hot today, I went out for a five-mile walk before the day got any warmer. The walk was easy, though I started to sweat on the way back. A little later, I walked to the health club and did my weights, and then took the yoga class.

I have decided that as far as weights are concerned I'm working for ease and good form rather than working to failure--I'm not trying to be mighty, just balanced--so I haven't been raising most of my weights ...

  5. Playing with the kids

    by , 07-18-2008 at 07:39 PM
I showed up for the Friday class and drilled with the kids. Dorrene was there, as was Kiersten, Ivan, and a couple of other juniors I know but whose names I forget. Ahren was having them do lunges with a foil blade under their feet so they could kick it out properly, and I joined them. Interesting when I focus on the mechanics of the feet in a restricted way, I find it easier to notice other things I do wrong--I realized I was pulling my arm back too far when recovering.

    Ahren set ...
