I handed them sabres today. Louie, Charlie, and one other boy weren't there, so I had enough weapons. I showed them how to hold them, had them do footwork with "coach says" while waggling them loosely, then had them keep distance in engagement. They told me the weapons were heavy. I had them play a game of 3-15 and dismissed them. I really only have about 45 minutes tops to teach them, and though I warm them up for 5-10 minutes beforehand I have given up leading stretching.

So at practice yesterday, I was running some footwork drills, one of them being double retreat lunge. The best fencer on the team very seriously questioned me on it afterwords, when we weren't around the rest of the team. Saying that retreat lunge isn't important in any weapon, except maybe epee. Just a quick entry. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. Its always a holiday that makes you think about the people that mean most to you, which can be an interesting experience sometimes. I'l be making a long post soon about some random coaching related thoughts that I have rolling around in my head, cuz it seems like something... somewhere... is WRONG.
