  1. Discharged

    by , 08-18-2007 at 12:02 AM
I'm discharged from OT with a set of instructions. My grip is better than it was three weeks ago and while I still have occasional pains when doing something I shouldn't, I'm relatively confident that if I keep doing all the right things, I'll recover.

The therapist said I caught it early and thus we didn't have to do many of the things she usually has to do with patients.

    Whew!

I'm still doing a heck of a lot (imho). The stretching exercises are every ...

  2. Szombathely 2007

    by , 08-16-2007 at 03:50 PM
Here are my observations and recommendations about the camp in Szombathely, Hungary. I'll preface them with a few comments about myself so that you might have some margin for error.

I'm a thirty-nine year-old epeeist of good-to-middling ability. I train in France but learned to fence in the United States (back in 1986), where I've worked with American, Italian, and Russian maîtres d'armes. I've participated in two other camps both as an attendee and coach. I came to Szombathely attracted ...

  3. Stop When It Hurts

    by , 08-15-2007 at 11:04 PM
I went to practice tonight and fenced Mark (under 12) for a warmup and then his father, Darrin, and sometime during that second bout, I realized that I had a twinge of pain. However, I was about three touches past the original pain when I realized it had hurt and it wasn't hurting THEN so I kept going.

Stupid? Yes. You'd think I would have learned by now.

I decided to do just one more bout -- which wasn't a keep-score bout, but simply fencing with our WSDIII medalist, ...

  4. Hang time

    by , 08-15-2007 at 09:54 PM
Finally made it into fencing tonight. The camp was finishing up. I saw some seriously awful-looking footwork and handwork--kids holding weapons like candlesticks, galumphing around--and asked if Mark was doing non-dominant with them; Dorene said he was making everyone fence foil, which figures, but Lara said there were also some kids who weren't ours and were not very good, which also figures.

Sabre fencers there were Ben S. and Sam S. and Dapper Dan, followed by Nick Minott suiting ...

  5. Short Steps on a Long Road

    by , 08-15-2007 at 12:22 PM (Greybeard's Brain Blog)
Well, I am two months out of surgery and not 100%. The rubric of "the impatient family" fits once again.

I am so jazzed, I have been walking the 2 X 4 in PT without falling into the lava for two weeks, I have done 500 yards in the pool twice and I have done my garage workouts and discovered that I need a LOT of footwork practice.

The only real downer is the eye issue. I can force single vision at a distance, but the close up work is almost impossible. ...
