    New fencers come to fencing with lots of enthusiasm. Often you’ll see a new fencer in the corner, working with a practice target or dummy, and a few nights or weeks later, they will be out on the floor, trying out their “new move”. Often they are disappointed to find out that not only does their “new move” already have a name, but the older fencers have seen it before and already have a counter for it.*

  2. Shifting Gears

    I've been complaining for a while that my left knee problem means I've been stuck in first gear and thus my movement up and down the strip looks like the Little Old Lady From Pasadena has taken up fencing. This last week, I've been working as much as possible on forward-forward-back and I note that my footwork now reminds me of the 1960 American Rambler that I drove as a teenager.
