    I rode my bike over to fencing--lovely weather!--so I was warmed up when I got there, as if I needed it. The pollen count is high and it was muggy today, even though it probably was no more than 80 degrees F.

    I had my lessons tonight instead of Monday. With Ahren: First, a forward take in four similar to the forward take in five we were working on last week (which my referee in the pool saw just fine as an attack, so I was executing correctly). It's a nice preparatory action. ...

  2. He's only four, but he's got potential!

    Next to training fencers, the most important job I have as a coach is talking to the parents of my fencers. I’ve learned that when you take on a student, you also take on the parents of that student. I’ve been fortunate to have had great parents for the thirty years that I’ve been coaching. I have had a few parents, however, who have single-handedly illustrated to me that it’s important to talk to the parents before taking on a student.
