  1. One Day at a Time

    by , 04-30-2007 at 11:58 PM (Greybeard's Brain Blog)
It was sort of a tough day at work. I should have my internet taken away from me. I did find a site with actual pictures of a craniotomy. Good thing I will be asleep. I imagine I will have a good size headache. Not to mention a good sound as the wind whistles through.

I tried calling the surgeon's office to schedule but the person who does the scheduling was still out. Sort of a disappointment, but not really.

I got home and really didn't want to go work out. I was ...

  2. Sparse pickings

I arrived late because of a work function and couldn't take a lesson with Ahren. He showed me a couple of things I can do in the weight room--leg stuff with the sled and a core exercise that might pay off.

The only other sabre fencer there was Alexei, who hasn't been around all month. I suited up and worked with him for what must have been about an hour. Josef, on his way out as I started, told me to work on what we had done in Wednesday's lesson. "Make provocation," ...

Today was check-up day at the Physical Therapy location.

The bad news is that my knee is swollen this morning. Next time I drive three hours (one way) to a competition, I need to ice that knee a little longer before driving home.

The good news is that I've made good progress and I turned in the torture device. I can do an active heel lift without needing to warm up first. I have full extension and flex. The strength tests were in the 70s except for one, which was ...

It's funny about fencing and fencers. We are all generally smart people, but it often appears that intelligence flies out of people's heads like birds off a wire, just as soon as they walk into a fencing club.

I recently responded to a post on a local forum about the wearing of knickers and a plastron at a local event. The poster was curious if they were going to be required, since the event wasn't going to be a USFA sanctioned tournament (due to a technicality). My response was that ...

  5. No DII or DIII for me

    by , 04-29-2007 at 09:13 PM
I didn't make the cut at the Division Qualifiers (I was the fourth fencer and only three could go) so I'll only be able to fence Veteran at the Summer Nationals this year. It's a good thing I'd already decided that it might be wise to concentrate on that event only at the SN. Still, I've been off the strip for almost 5 months and I really, really would have liked to have fenced well enough to qualify.

Next season, the knee should be a little more function and I should be able to step ...
