  1. Directing epee at the USACFC

    by , 03-31-2007 at 10:20 PM
Anyone who believes directing epee is EASY (especially on a wooden floor) needs to try it for a while.

I had no expectations that it would be easy. I did hope that I'd be useful.

Pool bouts were initially *not that difficult*. We did not have the boxes with remotes and scoring capabilitity and after trying a couple of bouts recording on the clipboard and then just keeping track with fingers, I switched to recording the score on folded paper in my hand to lessen the ...

  2. Lessons from El Chucko

    by , 03-30-2007 at 12:09 PM
Being the last week of the month, we practiced being in “tournament” mode. We did a 15-touche round-robin of all the epeeists. Every bout was intended to simulate tournament conditions. I did fairly well, winning half my bouts. I lost badly only to my coach, but he has my game down. Others were close matches. The new guy (coming back after a 20 year hiatus) nearly beat me. Later, when I fenced MF, I came back from a 4 point deficit at the 1st 3-minute break to ultimately win the bout. Lots ...

  3. Amateurs and Generals

"Amateurs talk about strategy. Generals talk about logistics."

I feel the same way about the quote above as I do about footwork and distance. The best fencers and coaches I talk to always talk about the tempo of the action, where "tempo" always means something more than just speed. They use the word "tempo" the way a physicist uses the word "space": the reference contexual, but almost always clear -- provided your focus in describing actions is ...

  4. Half a lesson and no sectional

    by , 03-29-2007 at 10:11 PM
It seems the rules for qualify for DIA, DII, and DIII have changed since last year and I'll need to go to the division qualifier if I want to fence DII and/or III so if I fenced Sunday, I'd be -- in Coach's words -- taking a risk for nothing.

So I decided to test my legs tonight instead and at the end of 10 minutes of fencing, my left knee felt sore. However, it was no more sore than it usually is during weight training and it didn't swell (thus far) so I'm cautiously optomistic. ...

  5. SC youth and cadet qualifiers

    by , 03-29-2007 at 11:28 AM
Our list for the nationals has begun we have 25 already. The SC divisional youth and cadet are over before it even began (it was all us, go figure). I am having flashbacks to NC when I first moved down (Greg Porter what are you up to now?) or the HB division when I first went back. I talk to Rod and the national events and BC told me in an email about an event that he attended up there after not picking up a weapon in 3 years. It has been seven years now. Wow, time flies.

    So, ...
