I directed some epee bouts today. It's been a while since I last directed epee, so I printed out the notes I'd created last summer and spent part of last week reviewing the rules for the exam. Snow was on the ground when I got up this morning, and it began to rain soon after, so I thought twice about driving up to Medeo, but decided what with my new tires I would be all right if I took it easy on the ramps and drove the speed limit or below. The experiment I started a few days ago of eschewing my nightly glass of wine is complete. I can see a clear difference in how I feel and my level of focus and energy at the tournament. I can see now that the nightly glass of wine had be come a crutch, helping me to get to sleep, and a habit, not of the good variety. I have decided to stop - cold turkey. Well, I spent the afternoon being pummeled by 14 and 15 year olds. Man they have gotten good. I also fenced one of the coaches, he is on the UCSD team and was All American last season. The best I have ever done against him is losing 15-7 at a tournament, which was a very good bout for me. Afterwards he told me I was “Looking like a fencer” and moving well, keeping good distance, etc. I told him not to hold back during the bout and I lost 15-4. He is also like greased lightning. He ...
