  1. You Probably Suck

    A good drive down, no problems, and I had reminded myself this morning that this is for practice and for fun, so I was relaxed and enjoying the music on my CD player. The mixed sabre, it said on the flyer, was at 12:00 and I wasn't sure whether that was open of check-in, close of check-in, or start of fencing, so I arrived around 11:00. I guess we started somewhere near 12:45. Although there were enough women for a separate epee, we didn't have enough for the sabre so it was mixed.

  2. A brief and cryptic entry, expanded on

    You will probably never be Olympic Champion.

    It's a statistical truth. Of all the people in the world who fence, only one person every four years (per individual event, naturally) can be Olympic Champion.

    The important thing to understand about statements like that is that they exist to weed out the weak. If someone says, "You will probably not be X," and you allow that to dampen your motivation, you are accepting weakness.

  3. Feeling Behind...

    This is probably the most sententious nonsense I've ever written about fencing. I am trying to get at what makes tempo, in the somewhat mystical sense of the right moment to attack (and the correct moment to execute a defensive action, which is an aspect of tempo that is not very often explored). But it is kind of like jazz, if you have to ask, you'll never know,... and very hard to pin down in words.

    Back foot weighted = able to move forward and attack, not able to retreat.
