  1. tournament continued

    by , 01-25-2007 at 06:01 PM
Today we got through most of one pool and two thirds of the other two. It was also notable for the first dispute about refereeing. All three boys were sixth graders--sharp-nosed, waiflike Keenan, sulky, easily discouraged Jake, and solemn, businesslike Grayson. Keenan has excellent form and moves well, but he was making a beat-attack on Jake's weapon that was not obvious to Grayson, the referee. I spoke to the three of them about the brutal facts:

Number one, the referee is always ...

  2. Taking a few months off

    by , 01-25-2007 at 10:08 AM
My coach has suggested I take a few months off to give my body time to heal and to focus on directing instead.

I hate the idea. Then again, there's no magic wand or Star Trek technology available to make my knee heal faster.

Focusing on directing at least keeps me active.

The guys are going to hate me for a while. I am confident that I understand the written rules but I'm terrible at directing on the strip. Halt! Attack from the right, parry, rip oste. ...

I took off and ran pretty fast the whole way to the college, and took the boys by surprise so they had to work hard to catch up and pass me. They knew I was doing it on purpose, though, and I said to them that before this I was just happy if they jogged most of the way, but now they are in better condition so I am challenging them.

after taking a lot of mental lessons home with me from this last nac, i had a great practice last night. just felt so good that i needed to post about it.

yeah, first practice since the nac. deadlines at work and taking care of the little things (like obtaining food and clothing) made me need to skip a few practices. and i was late to this one because of work.

things felt good, though. i was fencing very well, trying out new things (mostly things that didn't really ...

  5. Parries and Transfers and Binds, Oh My!

    by , 01-24-2007 at 11:25 AM
Last Thursday I learned something important about epee fencing: Don’t do it like foil.

While that may seem obvious to anybody that fences epee, I do fence both foil and epee and sometimes it is difficult to get my body and mind to play the appropriate game at the appropriate time.

I was fencing epee with El Chucko. He was attacking and landing his point on me before I could land mine on him. After our bout, he asked me why that was happening. I have long arms and ...
