Vezzali adds another world cup win

New York, June 14 – Valentina Vezzali has won the World Cup after winning the world team title.  It was the 51st victory for Vezzali. 

Russians win gold, silver at NY Sabre World Cup

In a repeat of the 1996 Olympic Gold medal bout, Russian teammates Stanislav Pozdniakov and Sergei Charikov met in the finals of the 2004 New York Grand Prix.

Lee advances, Smart and Rogers out

NEW YORK – US fencer Ivan Lee defeated Russian Alexey Yakimenko 15-11 to move into the Final 4 at the New York Grand Prix world cup event.   

Russia wins Women’s Team Sabre World Championship

Russia’s women’s sabre team avenged an earlier loss by their men’s sabre team by defeating the United States 45-43 to claim the World Championship for Women’s Team Sabre.

Italy wins Women’s Team Foil World Championships

NEW YORK – Italy used a 5-0 run in the middle of the gold medal match to secure what might have been a 4th straight Olympic Gold medal.  Italy defeated Romania 42-28 using a pair of masterful performances by world #1 Valentina Vezzali.

Romania upsets Poland at World Championships

The #1 ranked Polish women’s foil team was upset by Romania in a close match at the 2004 World Women’s Team Foil World Championships.

US Men’s Sabre Wins NY Grand Prix

In a team event that has seeding implications for the Olympic Games, the United States gave notice to the world that the US is not the team you want to face.  The United States entered the event #9 in the world team rankings and as the 7th seed in the Olympic direct elimination tournament.

Road to Athens: Zagunis makes 3 for US Women’s Sabre!

{mosimage}“This was the best weekend of my life!” US Women’s Sabre fencer Mariel Zagunis now has her ticket punched for Athens!  Zagunis capped off a strong World Cup win with the announcement by the US Fencing Association that she had been awarded a bid to compete in the Athens Olympic Games.
