Here's a question that I receive a lot:

"Fencing sounds cool.  Do you have any videos where I can see more of it?"

Fencing is a very fast and dynamic sport, but because the US has not traditionally been a powerhouse, and because there are no multi-million dollar contracts to sign or large pools of prize money to win, it's a sport that does not recieve a lot of media attention.

There are, however, videos in circulation that show coverage of world level fencing tournaments as well as training videos where you can watch how a world class coach gives lessons.

Here are links to a few of those videos:

Tyshler Training of a Champion series: This series of videos from the Tyshler Fencing School highlight both technical and tactical aspects of fencing, from training for championship level footwork, to videos on each of the 3 weapons of fencing.

Foil Actions CD-ROM: Roughly 113 video clips, sorted by tactic. The Foil Fencing Actions CD-ROM is a brand-new, cutting-edge training tool for fencers who need more.  Each video clip is shown within a web page that includes an article explaining which fencer scores the point, what to look for in the action, and when you should use this action in your own bouting.

Competition Videos:  Do you want to see how world class fencers compete?  Unless you get to New York City in June, or are able to travel about Europe to see the A-Grade events, the best way to see this level of fencing is by watching these competition videos.

Current competition videos include:

  • DVDs of the 2003 World Championships in Havana, Cuba
  • DVD of the 2002 Epee World Championships in Lisbon, Portugal
  • DVDs of World Cup events from 2003 and 2004

Online Video Clips: You can also find some video clips of world and US National level bouts online at Fencing.Net.  This gives you a chance to see fencing on the "small screen" before you go to your local club or purchase a DVD of an entire tournament.
